According to Trevor Noah in the clip, he describes how social contracts are meant to keep societies intact and stable. I think the most important thing I took from his talk, was him saying, “…black American people, watch time and time again, how the contract they have signed with society, is not being honored by the society that has forced them to sign it with them.” I like how he explains that we must be able to hold those at the top to be most accountable, because often times they set the tone and mood for the current affairs in society.

Pertaining to the film I am not your Negro , James Baldwin decided to discuss the lives of Malcolm X, MLK Jr., and Medgar Evers, because of the dedication and efforts they gave to their communities which ultimately gave their lives. Additionally, I think Baldwin wanted to contrast the different ways in which MLK Jr., and Malcom X went about fighting for equality. Even though they sought after it in two different ways, they only wanted better for the black community of America, and I think that’s really what Baldwin wanted to highlight.

As a history buff, it was very fascinating to see all sorts of footage from the 1920s-1960s of America. Seeing footage of violent mobs is nothing new to me, but it still sort of shocks me even now. I suppose that throughout the ages, people will continue to express their violent tendencies just as many did in the past. The film makes me think about how America will continue to grow within our lifetime, and where we will go. I think my biggest takeaway is something that I’ve repeated many times in past blog posts. I think the best way for everyone to promote equality and integration, starts at the individual level, and at home.
