Education and Determination

According to many, Confucius’ wisdom declared him as “the fundamental shaper and transmitter of the cultural heritage.” (B1090) One of his main concentrations in his book, The Analects, is on education. His very first statement says “To learn something and then put it into practice at the right time: is this not a joy?…” (B1091) There are many statements in The Analects that demonstrate how crucial education and determination are to Confucius.

Similarly, the article “Losing Leg, But Keeping His Drive To Succeed” a brave character named Jovins Dorestan resembles Confucius’ mentality on education and determination. In January 2010, Haiti was struck by a horrific earthquake. This earthquake is the cause of Dorestan’s amputated leg but is the result of him coming to New York, the city of opportunity. Dorestan was very fortunate not only to receive a prosthetic leg, but also to learn English. Once the operation was completed Dorestan began taking English classes. He knew almost no English and after only ten months now speaks and writes in English fluently. “I have determination… Education is the best way to succeed.” (NY Times)

Jovins Dorestan’s determination is similar to a statement of Confucius’, “At fifteen, I set my mind upon learning. At thirty, I took my stand. At forty, I had no doubts. At fifty, I knew the will of Heaven. At sixty, my ear was attuned. At seventy, I follow all the desires of my heart without breaking any rule.” (B1092 2.4) Having the motivation and desire to learn is extremely crucial and can benefit anyone.

The Thousand and One Nights

The Thousands and One Nights.”

The article that I picked is about U.S. shutting down all the websites that involves in piracy. The websites made illegal copies of movies, music and different other programs that were available to users using Internet all over the world. But U.S. seems to be very considered about this topic matter, first because piracy is a crime and second that they cannot control what people download from the Internet, which is a very vast. So, it would be easier and safer if the hosting sites were closed or banned. The Immigration and Customs enforcement division of the Homeland security took such action because they saw high risk and threat that U.S. could have. They take down the site put a notice of their own so that users are aware. They are still in the action of closing down many more other sites and they have been searching for them everyday.
I find this article to be very related to the story of Shahrayar who finds his wife cheating on him over a slave. The women wore veils, which was used to cover their body, so it was difficult to identify them. The sites also disguises themselves to look like a decent website but instead they give off data that users can share. In the story Shahrayar’s wife took advantage of this by getting the slaves dress up in veils and come to the palace. When he comes to know about his wife’s act, he makes to plan to catch her red-handed. “It became King Shahrayar’s custom…death the next morning.” (B, 414) It is similar to the test that the government officials are doing; they check the sites and then turn them down.

Asian Literature

The New York Times article, For Afghan Wives, a Desperate, Fiery Way Out, it discusses how the woman in Afghan feel as if they have no way out. Their lives are controlled by their husbands, or their husband’s family. They are seen as inferior to the men they are married to. Some of these woman are arranged to be married very young and to cater to their husbands. These woman are constantly subjected to emotional and physical abuse from their husbands, their in-laws, and even their own families. The article proves this, “It is shameful here to admit to troubles at home, and mental illness often goes undiagnosed or untreated. Ms. Zada, the hospital staff said, probably suffered from depression. The choices for Afghan women are extraordinarily restricted: Their family is their fate. There is little chance for education, little choice about whom a woman marries, no choice at all about her role in her own house. Her primary job is to serve her husband’s family. Outside that world, she is an outcast.” They feel the only way out is to set themselves on fire and burn to death. These woman are normally in a deep depression and are not able to receive help. They believe that the only way to be able to end their depression and abuse is to burn themselves.
The Asian literature we are discussing in class shows how woman live in societies where they are seen as inferior to men. Males are portrayed as the greater gender and females are constantly reminded their place in society. One example of this is in The Book of Songs. The Book states, “So he bears a son, And puts him to sleep upon a bed, Clothes him in robes, Gives me a jade scepter to play with. The child’s howling is very lusty; In red greaves shall he flare, Be lord and king of house and home. Then he bears a daughter, And puts her upon the ground, Clothes her in swaddling-clothes, Gives her a loom-whorl to play with. For her no decorations, no emblems; Her only care, the wine and food, And how to give no trouble to father and mother” (A, 1040). This shows the difference in where the males and females are placed in society. The boys are to grow up and be kings and the girls are to grow up and their only worry is to take care of their husband. Woman are shown in the Asian literature to only do as they are told and to be under complete control of a man. The article from the New York Times shows that the culture has no changed drastically. Today woman are still seen as inferior and are not entitled to the same rights as men. It is very depressing that woman are now going as far as burning themselves to get away from the lives they are born into.

Throne of Blood

The play, “Throne of Blood” was very confusing to me, I mainly understood the parts that seemed to have a comparison to Shakespeare’s “Macbeth“. However, the theater review in the New York Times I do not completely agree with. I agree that the costumes were very nice and that the scenery was not extravagant. What I do not agree with is that the critic is comparing the play to the movie, and although I did not see the movie, I do not believe that is a fair comparison. Also the critic did not like the spirit in the play and did not think it was creepy. I really enjoyed that part and I enjoyed the costume and the voice they gave the spirit. The article also says, “I spent a fair amount of time asking myself how Mr. Chong would manage to recreate the movie’s celebrated last scene, in which Washizu staggers around like a death-defying human pincushion after his own soldiers have sprayed him with arrows. The answer was uninspired, an appropriate anticlimax for an ill-conceived theatrical enterprise.” I believe that is a little harsh, even though the story line was confusing for me and I had a hard time following what was going on, overall I thought that the actors and the way the story was portrayed was not that bad. The scene the critic is talking about is actually one scene I understood and thought was made very clear. He is making too many comparisons to a movie, where effects and camera angles make telling a story much easier. Overall I thought the play was interesting and put together nicely.

The One Thousand and One Nights

In The One Thousand and One Nights, the story discusses how woman are betraying their husbands. In one instance Shahrayar’s wife is caught cheating with a slave. She is able to get away with this by using the veil that woman are told to wear in their society. Woman are told to wear the veils to cover up their beauty in public, however women realized to use this belief in their favor. In The One Thousand and One Nights the woman are shown as using their veils to cover up their identity and provide them with freedom. It is very hard to tell woman apart when they are completely covered up and this makes it very easy to secure their identity. Shahrayar’s wife uses her veil to make herself blend in with the slave girls and the men they are sleeping with wear the veils to make them appear to be slave girls as well. The Thousand and One Nights says, “…[A]nd there emerged, strutting like a dark-eyes deer, the lady, his brother’s wife, with twenty slave-girls, ten white and ten black. … Then they sat down, took off their clothes, and suddenly there were ten slave-girls and ten black slaves dressed in the same clothes as the girls” (B,410). After Shahrayar sees what is going on he decides to never trust a woman again. He comes up with a plan to sleep with a new girl every night and then put them to death. That way they will not be able to sleep with anyone else. This is Shahrayar’s attempt to control woman.
In the New York Time’s, recently there was an article, Google Sees Rules Violations in Limits on Internet Access. This article discusses how China, and other countries, are attempting to control the internet by blocking what people are allowed to access. The internet, since it was created, always provided freedom. Users are able to access any site and are able to obtain any information they are looking for. Some people used the internet to cover up their identity because anybody can be whoever they would like to be online. Also there are many websites now with information that users are allowed to put up, like Wikipedia. The freedom on the internet is endless, or so it was. Now Google is saying that government is attempting to control the internet by blocking what users are allowed to do. The article states, “The Google policy paper said that more than 40 governments around the world now to some extent restrict freedom of information on the Internet — which it said was more than a tenfold increase in the last decade of governments with such restrictions.” Most of the governments that want to go about this are from the East. Google is arguing that blocking the free flow of information on the internet is against human rights and will block economic growth. This article is similar to the story, The One Thousand and One Nights because as woman are using the veils to allow themselves freedom, the internet has provided users with freedom. Now the government, similar to Shahrayar, is attempting to control the rights given to people, or these women. The government is attempting to use censorship to control internet uses, and Shahrayar is killing women, so that they will have absolutely no freedom after him.

A Thousand and One Nights

When tragedies strike a person’s true character is tested. Sometimes a person is able to learn from these unfortunate events and sometimes it can bring the worst in people. In The Thousand and One Nights, King Shahrayar finds out that his wife has betrayed him  by having an affair. Upon hearing this news King Shahrayar was furious. Thereafter, the king began acting irrationally. To save himself from the “wickedness and cunning of women” (B,413), King Shahrayar decided to marry a woman, sleep with her and have her killed the next morning. He believed that “there is not a single chaste women anywhere on the entire face of the earth” (B, 413), and instead of punishing the one women who betrayed him, he decides to punish all women. He overcame his emotional tragedy by punishing the entire female race. From his killings he hoped to achieve satisfaction.

In the NY Times article “An Israeli novelist writes of pain, private and public” by Ethan Bronner, David Grossman deals with his tragedy differently. In 2005, Grossman lost his son in combat in the Lebanon War. Grossman’s whole world was shattered. He was lost and confused as to how to go on with his life. The answers to his confusion came in his writings. In the article, Grossman says ” writing is my home, it was a place where I again recognized myself”. Instead of becoming bitter and punishing the world around him, he coped with his tragedy by writing. He was able to translate his pained emotions into a great novel.

Throne of Blood

“Throne of Blood”

I agree with some of the points that are made in the review and disagree with some others. The critique comments, “It essentially boils down to a lot of men charging back and forth across a mostly dark and bare stage in fancy samurai get-ups.” There was not much decoration on the stage except for the bricked wall at the back and the ghostly atmosphere. It wasn’t so The play was sort of slow and Of course the play was mostly a dark stage and characters running around like the critique mentioned. But the writer also mentioned that, “Those get ups, as I said, are beautifully designed by Stefani Mar and offer an eyeful of visual poetry to distract from the generally prosaic proceedings.” I disagree to this because the dress of the characters were very decent in the play. The dialogues and characters were very strong in the play. And the emptiness in the stage was mostly covered by a screen that showed the meanings of certain actions in the play. Overall, i disagree with the review in the NY times. The play wasn’t perfect but it is not that bad as critiqued in the review.

Thousand and One Nights

The reading of Thousand and One Nights is one that can be very closely related to the NY Times article Diana’s Ring Seals Prince William’s Marriage Plans. For example, Shahrazad and Kate Middleton are both very well educated.  “The oldest daughter, Shahrazad had read books of literature, philosophy, and medicine. (414) Kate also went to a very prestigious school and is also very well educated.   “Should Miss Middleton become Queen Catherine, she would be the first queen in British history to have a college degree, or indeed, to have any college education at all.”
It can also be inferred that both men in these instance fell in love because of the intelligence that these woman have.   Kate and Prince William met at the same university and so they exchanged ideas, and opinions, which could have led to the initial attraction. Sometimes this type of attraction is just as powerful as sexual and so we must give some credit to Kate’s intelligence as something that Prince William fell in love with.  In comparison, Shahryar fell in love with Shahrazad because of her ability to tell many tales and keep him interested in keeping her alive to tell these stories.  There may have been sexual tension but the main source of stimulation was Shahrazad’s intelligence.

Another comparison that can be made is that both Shahrazad and Miss. Middleton entered dangerous situations. Shahrazad entered a more life-threatening situation where every night she would have to persuade the king to keep her alive for another day.  In Miss. Middleton’s case it is more superstitious but the previous Princess, Lady Diana met a tragic demise and so Kate is entering the situation knowing what happened to the last princess.  This however is highly superstitious but it is a fact nonetheless.

Throne of Blood

The play, Throne of Blood was a very enjoyable play to watch.  I enjoyed the story as well as the costumes, which were very well crafted and reminiscent of ancient Japan.  The dialogue was easy to understand and so was the plot. However, I felt that the story dragged on at some unnecessary points and moved very fast at times where it seemed there should have been more dialogue. Having watched the original Macbeth, they followed the original story very well.  It is difficult to replicate a movie on stage sometimes and in this case, some scenes were just that

The review from NY Times states, “It essentially boils down to a lot of men charging back and forth across a mostly dark and bare stage in fancy samurai getups.”
This quote is true to an extent because all the fight scenes were a bit ridiculous and it was mostly characters just running back and forth and it was hard to tell what the director was trying to convey.  The costumes were by far the best part of the play.

Asian literature

There are times in life when one feels as if there is no way out of a situation.  They feel helpless, and have lost hope in their life entirely.  Situations like these are what lead to suicide as a way of escape from their problems.  In Afghanistan women are very oppressed and treated in a very cruel way by their government and their family. In order to escape this oppression the women set themselves on fire using lighter fluid and a match.  For women in Afghanistan they have no release from their family.  They cannot runaway in order to escape the cruelty so they must endure this hardship.  The NY Times article states, “Returned runaways are often shot or stabbed in honor killings because the families fear they have spent time unchaperoned with a man.”

The situation is similar the environment during the time of The Pillowbook written by Sei Shonagon.  During this time women were not given the freedom to express themselves and were oppressed just as present day Afghanistan.  By writing The Pillowbook, Shonagon found her outlet to express herself in a oppressive society.  Although less harmful than burning yourself, society still condemned the act which is why her diary was not meant to be public nor did she wish for it to be. She says, “when I have a good deal of time to myself and thought no one would notice what I was doing.” (p 258)

Women during both of these times are oppressed and restricted from expression.  However, it is impossible to keep feeling bottled up inside forever and so when the feelings must come out, they can either be done in a very harmful way such as suicide or in a constructive way such as writing a diary.

Fiery way out
