Artist Statement

Posted on September 28, 2014 ·

My work explores the moment of escaped emotions. It captures the quick seconds of bliss, anger, affection, or confusion, where a person is no longer posing but reflexing how they truly feel at the time. These moments are unable to be replicated and can be moments that are hard to share with others.

I enjoy the mysterious element emotion adds to photographs, videos, or paintings because when an emotion is genuine it can invoke a personal connection with the viewer. I want viewers to understand through my work the unspoken language is just as important as the words we speak. I want viewers to add their own personal lives to the images they see. My art pieces are not meant represent just someone’s face but through the persons eyes or body expression the viewer can see a mirror reflection of the world that hides in their minds.

I often add a fictional touch to my art works by trying different brush tool and colors to add contrast or a drawn effect. I hope you find the connections and the different meanings my art work represents.

The Art in Advertising

Posted on September 16, 2014 ·

In chapter 1 “Techology as a Tool”, Paul mentions the impact the medium of photography has on the advertising industry. A statement I enjoyed was “in the aesthetics of advertising, the ‘image’ makes the fluent transition from mere representation to branding, in which is it is inscribed with a concept of value.”

I understand the transition to be the quick understanding when a viewer no longer sees just a pair a shoes on a poster but sees a Nike or Jimmy Choo shoe. Like most art pieces the photography of an advertisement is meant to transfer a message to an audience. I find that the message of an advertisement can be less abstract when compared to art that does not represent a brand but represents an artist’s unique style. I believe  that an advertisement is unique to the particular brand it cannot be replicated for another brand. For example when a ad is unique to a brand no other brand can just stamp their logo on the image without someone saying, “doesn’t this ad look like a McDonald ad when it’s a Wendy’s ad.”

An art work I enjoyed was KIDING, I love Calpe because although the photo manipulation of a blur is simple, my eyes were focused on the thumbnails logos. If this advertisement was placed next to another advertisement that had a fully focused image, it can catch your eye because the blur is unusual. Having an advertisement with a blur background is risky but can bring attention because it can cause a wonder because it is not focusing on the image but on the focus content.

I found it interesting how Paul explained the term “new” media by tracing back to the history of digital art. This got me thinking about the evolution of digital art because photography is possible without an actual camera but with a phone. I would like to do more research on what effect do smartphones have on digital photography.

Thoughts on The Secrets in Plastic

Posted on September 14, 2014 ·

Experiencing the thought process of an artist’s work is fascinating. Artist Ben and Marina explained what is really in plastic and allowed us to do our own research on plastic items we brought in. I found it surprising  how damaging plastic can be to the human body because of the chemicals that are in plastic objects. For example in the NY Time article, “In Plastics and Cans, a Threat to Women,” high levels of Bisphenol A was found in plastic, this can be harmful for women ovaries and can lead to infertility. But yet, many of us won’t think twice before using or consuming from plastic items.

On Wednesday, when artist Marina explained the harm that plastic can cause to our bodies, I questioned whether I should be holding  the plastic plate and utensils in my hands. I also wondered what effects did chemicals found in plastic had already had on my body in the past years.  It’s great when art can bring awareness to issues that are in everyday objects.

I thought that it would be interesting if material items like water bottles would have a warning labels stating all the chemicals that are found in the plastic bottle. Just like we know the ingredients that are in what we eat or drink, we should know what is in the containers that are holding what we consume.

I enjoyed how the class was apart of the exhibition. The plastic objects we brought in will help to continue the story of what is really in these items.

Thoughts on The Medium is the message

Posted on September 7, 2014 ·

I found that McLuhan’s main point in The Medium is the Message was to rid the ignorance of not being aware of our every surrounding.  A statement that stood out to me was “‘The Medium is the Message’ is a look around to see what’s happening.” I found this profound because it is so simple but can be challenging because of the preoccupation of technology. When I look around at the people who surround me they are too busy trying not to make any eye contact with anything that is human.

The pen is an extension of the brain.  This means that a pen is how the brain can express an idea in words that can be seen.
