Thoughts on The Secrets in Plastic

Posted on September 14, 2014 ·

Experiencing the thought process of an artist’s work is fascinating. Artist Ben and Marina explained what is really in plastic and allowed us to do our own research on plastic items we brought in. I found it surprising  how damaging plastic can be to the human body because of the chemicals that are in plastic objects. For example in the NY Time article, “In Plastics and Cans, a Threat to Women,” high levels of Bisphenol A was found in plastic, this can be harmful for women ovaries and can lead to infertility. But yet, many of us won’t think twice before using or consuming from plastic items.

On Wednesday, when artist Marina explained the harm that plastic can cause to our bodies, I questioned whether I should be holding  the plastic plate and utensils in my hands. I also wondered what effects did chemicals found in plastic had already had on my body in the past years.  It’s great when art can bring awareness to issues that are in everyday objects.

I thought that it would be interesting if material items like water bottles would have a warning labels stating all the chemicals that are found in the plastic bottle. Just like we know the ingredients that are in what we eat or drink, we should know what is in the containers that are holding what we consume.

I enjoyed how the class was apart of the exhibition. The plastic objects we brought in will help to continue the story of what is really in these items.

Thoughts on The Medium is the message

Posted on September 7, 2014 ·

I found that McLuhan’s main point in The Medium is the Message was to rid the ignorance of not being aware of our every surrounding.  A statement that stood out to me was “‘The Medium is the Message’ is a look around to see what’s happening.” I found this profound because it is so simple but can be challenging because of the preoccupation of technology. When I look around at the people who surround me they are too busy trying not to make any eye contact with anything that is human.

The pen is an extension of the brain.  This means that a pen is how the brain can express an idea in words that can be seen.
