While the geneva conventions are a step in the right direction, it is evident that despite what the protocol aims to achieve, the geneva conventions are basically unenforceable. The lack of a powerful enforceable international law is one reason and as a result, states find creative ways to maneuver around the law. Even the United States recently did with the treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo bay where we claimed we had a different definition of torture which made waterboarding legal in our minds. Until the world takes these conventions seriously meaning any acts against human rights during war are dealt with serious consequences, unfortunately i think human rights will still be violated during war.
