Backgrounder: Marlboro

What use to be $ 200,000 worth of farm land has now turned into properties for million dollar homes. The place that use to have 1 elementary school, 1 middle school and a  high school has now become 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and a high school with added wings and floors, plus private schools scattered throughout the town.  Marlboro, New Jersey has taken a complete turn around since it was established on February 17, 1848.

During the 1600’s this 30,741 square mile land served as villages and agricultural land for the Lenni Lenape Native American tribes. There were as many as 20,000 native Americans. During this time, the Quakers began to try and conquer the land which will later become Marlboro. Many battles were fought on Marlboro’s soil such as the Battle of Monmouth. Throughout the civil war, the Quakers were slowly building up this town with a meeting house and cemetery which still stands today on Tennent Road and serves as a church today.

Marlboro has very little crime rate with a recording of 1 murder. (not counting the war casualties during the Battle of Monmouth) In 2003 the number of violent crimes reported by the FBI were 15. Recently there have been some house robberies which believe to be teenagers messing around with the town. Cameras have been set up since our police force is very strong action is being taken and it is not getting thrown under the rug.

Today, Marlboro has become a very family orientated community with 30,000 plus people. There are many parks with sport fields and festival’s at the town hall recreation area. In 2009 a dog park was set up and this brought many people and their love for pets together. A big part of Marlboro are the sport teams our towns put together. Football and baseball are the two biggest sports that bring our town together. From the middle school age to the high school fields every game has a whole crowd to cheer on the Marlboro Mustangs.

When you drive down the street you will always see people walking or running, families outside together, kids getting off there bus, and a well established historic town.
