On Sunday, Nov. 2, close to 4,000 members of Christian Cultural Center, located in Brooklyn, jumped to their feet and when asked what they would do on Tuesday Nov. 4, the immediate response reverberated through the building,“VOTE!”
For the past several years, Pastor A. R. Bernard has allowed local officials to come and give a brief speech about their campaigns. “He doesn’t want church to turn into a forum for campaign speeches, but he wants to keep the congregation informed of their choices,” said Rebekah Gordan, a legal assistant to CCC, in the second floor lobby of the church.
In order to open all the doors for the 30,000 members of CCC, the church, in collaboration with the Christian Cultural Center Legal Affinity Network, held a voter registration drive.
“It was held during the month of October and 320 voters were registered. It was a great success,” said Gordan.
The CCC Legal Affinity Network, comprised of lawyers, attorneys, and others that are interested in the law, work with others groups in the church to bring the maximum amount of knowledge to all the members and visitors to CCC. In a few months there will be a conference on mortgages, according to Gordan. The mortgage crisis, along with the economy, played a large part in this past election.
The youth in the church were not heavily sought after, but the members of the Legal Affinity Network made sure to talk about voting every chance they got. “We can only remind them how important it is to vote,” said Gordan.
