Huddled together were the cold and chilly on the corner of Farmers Boulevard and 136th Street in Jamaica, Queens early Saturday morning just days before the election, all hoping to steer the hand of fate and have their voices heard via the upcoming election.
“Knowing our bid in this election has been heard, being that we live in New York, we want to help play a more instrumental role in this monumental election,” said Karl Wade, a participant in the early morning canvassing expedition to Germantown, Pennsylvania located in north Philadelphia. Karl and his fellow canvassers hope to spur the populace and remind them to make their voices heard.
Canvassing is a way for supporters of a candidate to interact with the grassroots directly. This canvassing event organized by the Jamaica Grassroots Volunteer Office was held in support of Presidential Candidate Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
When asked about why this event took place Mona Huertez commented, “This is history in the making, right here and right now. In a few days time what’s done will be done and all of us here can say we were apart of the struggle, win or lose.”
