A Successful Conquest For “La Nueva Conquista”

236 Lafayette St. New York, NY, is home to a restaurant that by the looks of its exterior is not too welcoming. “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” is the most appropriate phrase that can be said about one of SOHO’s hidden treasures “La Nueva Conquista”. Positioned beneath a shabby apartment building, this restaurant of Dominican cuisine has become a favorite amongst SOHO commuters and residents. Serving such foods as pork chops, roasted chicken, rice mixed with black beans, and fried sweet plantains, La Nueva Conquista brings a spoon full of Dominican culture to SOHO.  Yelp.com a site that allows for public review of restaurants and many other city happenings, shows exactly how people feel about the Dominican eatery. “It’s a little hole in the wall, but it serves great food at cheap prices. It’s worth the trip” says a review by KP New York, NY. KP’s sentiment seems to be the overall opinion of the reviews posted. With hefty meals averaging $8-9, it’s somewhat surprising that such an establishment can survive in the overly commercialized neighborhood of SOHO.

As this is a tentative lead, my strategy was and is to point out an occurance of different cultures in SOHO. As I do want to focus mostly on this Restaurant and how it is fairing in this economy, I’d also implement some historical facts, as this restaurant has been in place for over 40 yrs. It would be relevent to show how a restaurant of this nature has survived over the decades. My ultimate goal is to show how small “hole in the wall” businesses remain optimistic in harsh econimic times, and what they think about other businesses in the neighborhood.

  1. The list of different foods offered makes my mouth water. Love the phrase ‘Spoonful of culture in Soho.” A great story idea to show the contrast of a popular cultural spot in SoHo. Sounds like a promising story about a small business in your neighborhood.

  2. This restaurant sounds good, I will be going and let you know if it’s as good as you say.

I agree. By reading your post, I want to make a trip to the restaurant just to try their foods.

It’s nice to know that you can still get a hefty, nice, “homely” meal for only $8-9, especially during this “recession”! This “hole in the wall” must be doing something right, considering it has been there for over 40 years. This sounds a lot like another tiny Dominican spot in Soho called Tauro restaurant. It’s extremely small and like the outside of La Nueva Conquista, the appearance does not justify the delicious food. It’s interesting that such small businesses can survive the economy with such low prices, especially in hard times.
