WXRK, known as K-Rock in New York City, will be switching to a Top 40 format at 5:00pm on Wednesday, March 11th. This mirrors stations such as z100 that play current hit songs spanning all genres.
The major change is coming due to the station’s declining ratings and is an effort to broaden the listening audience.
Some listeners feel that the station should hold on to what they have, and keep their loyal fans around. “It sucks for the [rock] scene, because now there’s nowhere to win tickets to concerts or find out about CD releases and signings,” says Cynthia Diaz from Spike TV Marketing. “Now have to go to the internet or TV – and it’s harder to hear about new bands.”
The K-Rock website is still up and running, at least for now. The site offers news regarding artists and tour dates and even allows people to stream songs online. No news on the upcoming switch, though.
Ms. Diaz has already looked to the internet for her rock music fix. “Basically the alternative, rock and hard rock scene doesn’t have a station that caters to [its fans] anymore, so we have to look elsewhere for our music. It drives us to not listen to the radio and purchase or download music instead.”

The boom in sales of MP3 players, such as Apple’s iPod can also be to blame for the declining radio ratings.
Even Baruch College student Michaela Yisreal, who says she rarely listens to the radio at all, and doesn’t listen to K-Rock, is disappointed in the change. “Everyone needs options. Most stations are pretty much top 40,” she feels. “Do we really need another one?”
This is a great article. I hardly ever listen to the radio because I have thousands of songs in my blackberry and most times I want to listen to something other than the current hits. It is sad tht K-Rock has to break away from its traditional format but, the station has to stay alive and playing hit songs gets more listeners.
