Last School Standing

There are plenty of public schools in Bensonhurst, but The Most Precious Blood School is the only Catholic School remaining in the neighborhood.

According to OBI, one of the major nonprofit companies sponsoring the school, enrollment for catholic schools has declined nationwide. Most Precious Blood was one of the schools in 2006 that almost closed down. With the help and support of OBI, the school was able to survive to this day. Unfortunately, the school is still in need of at least $150,000 in cash donation in order to keep doors open after this year.

According to Nyc.gov, Most Precious Blood is located in an area wher 41% of the residents are receiving some sort of income support. This is not good news for the school if it depends on the community to sustain itself.

Most Precious Blood together with OBI have created programs and services to help the school remain open. There are after school programs and arts and craft classes for elementary school students on the weekdays. Their gym located on Harway Avenue hosts monthly events including basketball games between local schools, bingo for seniors, the summer theater program and occasionally a summer carnival for children.

This month’s event on March 13 featured singing and dancing acts performed by Most Precious Blood students, the community and parents; admission was $10.00.

One Response to Last School Standing

  1. The weird thing I find about this, is The Most Precious Blood Catholic School in Astoria is going through the same thing. I think during these hard times, most catholic schools are going through the same things.
