Home Sweet Home

“There’s no place like home”. Too bad this isn’t a movie or a television show with white picket fences and no crime. Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn is not known as a dangerous area or even just a poor area to live in, I wish I could say the same about one building in particular on East 19th street.

When living in an apartment building, it is most likely that the tenant is renting. Nowadays to afford to own your own home or even own apartment is like a fairytale. Rent is higher, job positions are lowering, and the idea of good quality is going down the drain. I have lived in the same building my whole life, and I have watched my mother sign the lease time and time again for a more expensive yet the same apartment. This hits close to home to me because my mom just recently lost her job. The conflict is obvious—horrible economy, no job, and a higher rent, but it’s more than that. It’s paying more money for a filthy unsafe place that is supposed to be called home

At least twice a week the police come to where I live do to a constant increase in graffiti, drug paraphernalia, and kids who are reckless. Tenants in the building complain constantly about the condition and security of our building. The response—higher rent and nothing done.
