Low-housing options are becoming scarce, due to many high-rises and condominiums being erected. Many of the existing low-rent apartments are being phased out, as landlords are now increasing rent.
Another reason apartments are hard to find may be due to landlords renting out single room occupancies to tourists as hotel rooms. More on this topic can be found in this article.
Rent is increasing everywhere and some landlords are trying to make a profit from renting out one apartment to more 1 family. I know this because my uncle and his wife saw an ad about a room for rent in the newspaper, but little did they know they were suppose to share the kitchen, bathroom, and living room with another married couple. Well my uncle didn’t rent the place because of that.
OMG, that’s ridiculous. They had to share the kitchen, etc. Landlords are trying to be sneaky and get paid extra cash. They should indicate if it’s a shared kitchen or bathroom in the ad!
Where are real new yorkers suppose to live? Who can afford to stay in New York? I don’t think it’s the recent residents. With the way that rent is increasing only the rich will remain. That’s not the type of city we want. NYC is known as being so diverse not only in ethnicity and culture but also in socio-economical status. On the train, Mayor Bloomberg could be seated next to his janitor or a nurse or a Wall Street broker or a college student. That’s what so great about the city, there has always been a place for everyone and we come together on the public transportation and the busy streets and random interaction. You never know who you will come in contact with. The middle class is being pushed out into the surburbs and the surburbs are also pushing them out. What’s all this talk of the slowing of the real estate market? Developers are not hearing the same news. So many people are on the move, for so many different reasons- mostly because its too expensive to live in the city we all love.
