Christians believe that praying is everything. And that is exactly what one woman is doing in the name of politics – hosting a series of prayer meeting via teleconference, “Prayer Changes Things,” for the upcoming election.
Monique Ruffin, 40, is an avid prayer. Her grandmother raised her to be someone who believes that prayer is necessary for human existence. As her hopes for the election have been fluctuating, not knowing what to expect, she decided to host “Prayer Changes Things” so she can gather people for support and stay centered in her prayers.
To participate in this meeting, you can sign up on the Obama/Biden website. Next, you dial the teleconference number and enter the access code. Once you are on the call, you will hear Ruffin opening the prayer. Afterwards, everyone is given a chance to say a prayer and then Ruffin closes the prayer. The prayer meeting is 10 minutes long.
As I listened in on the teleconference, the callers were not praying for Obama to simply win the election. They were thanking God for all that he has done and praying for both campaigns. They were praying that God bless whichever campaign that is aligned to His heart. It was an amazing experience to hear people of different gender and backgrounds to come together and pray for the country over the phone.
Ruffin receives many e-mails from supporters to pray for Obama’s safety. “My prayer is that we will become more loving people. That our country will be safe for everyone. That there will be no need to pray for anyone’s safety because our country is a safe place,” said Ruffin.
Like Ruffin, many other callers have similar prayers. Seldom did anyone pray for a specific political issue. One man prayed, “Pray that your Spirit will unite this country,” and another woman prayed, “Heal our land.”
“Prayer Changes Things” is not the only way Ruffin is involved with the election. She has donated many dollars towards the Obama-Biden campaign, attended house meetings, and hosted a platform meeting.
This is a perfect example of how crazy politics, technology, religion, and the combination of all three are becoming. Telephoned prayer services? Now I’ve heard of everything.
I was speaking to someone the other day and they told me about Election Prayers that were being advertised on a conservative Christian talk radio show. They, of course, were talking about praying for McCain, not Obama.
