Essay 3 Final

Dear Reader,

Prior to this class I never thought much of creative writing. It was something you do in a Junior high english class and forgot shortly after the school year ended. Throughout this semester I’ve learned and incorporated different writing techniques into my essays and have evolved as a writer. Methods such as paragraphs breaks and lyric writing were foreign to me before I took this course, but I plan to use them more frequently. I will also continue to work on punctuation usage outside of commas. The Em Dash is steadily becoming a favorite, simply for the aesthetics it adds to the paper. With every new draft I could visually see my writing improving which has made me want to continue developing more creative writing skills. Hopefully you enjoy my final installment of the semester.

Enjoy your summer!

Xo,

Cass

Computer Blackout

Hi Group & Professor,

My computer blacked out as I was logging on to the internet. It’s been over an hour since it went down and after 15 minutes on the phone with Apple, I have to go in to the store to have a Genius look at it. I will upload my draft as soon as i am able to boot up my computer. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Overcoming Writer’s Block Poem

Hi Guys,

I’m doing my presentation on Overcoming Writer’s block tonight and I thought this poem would be a cool read. Enjoy!

Writer’s Block

It’s a sad, sad story when I get writer’s block
One that may lead to tears
Tears for my agonizing pain
Tears because you know or have the feeling

It’s a sad, sad story when i get writer’s block
The indescribable feeling of unknowing
The inner knowing that you just don’t know
A thought with no inspiration at all

It’s a sad, sad story when I get writer’s block
It’s an inner pain both physical and mental
It’s like having words at the tip of your tongue
That you can’t ever figure out

It’s a sad, sad story when I get writer’s block
The words don’t come to mind
The vision is gone
A story lost forever until it lands in the mind another

It’s a sad, sad story when I get writer’s block
An image wiped from my mind
The sparkle that is lost from my eye
My smile turned upside-down

It’s a sad, sad story when I get writer’s block
A story that is flowing, then stopped abruptly
A story with no end
One that is unwritten in mind and paper

It’s a sad, sad story when I get writer’s block
Wasting hours of life thinking
Thinking of the beginning of a life
Or the ending of their story

It’s still a sad, sad story when I get writer’s block
All of that pain and sorrow I go through
Luckily for me
I don’t have writer’s block

Zinsser’s Advice

One of my main problems when drafting a creative essay is over thinking the audience. I constantly question whether or not the reader will understand what I am describing. In the end I sometimes end up explaining my idea to the point of exhaustion. Zinssers’ strategy for this, is to write for yourself. He says that writers should try not to visualize a mass audience because “every reader is a different person.” I enjoy creative writing because it allows me to be flexible with my storytelling, but there is always the question of “will they get it?” For the second draft of essay 1 I will try out this approach, hopefully it works out for me.
