Zinsser’s Advice
One of my main problems when drafting a creative essay is over thinking the audience. I constantly question whether or not the reader will understand what I am describing. In the end I sometimes end up explaining my idea to the point of exhaustion. Zinssers’ strategy for this, is to write for yourself. He says that writers should try not to visualize a mass audience because “every reader is a different person.” I enjoy creative writing because it allows me to be flexible with my storytelling, but there is always the question of “will they get it?” For the second draft of essay 1 I will try out this approach, hopefully it works out for me.
