Essay 3 Final

Dear Reader,

Prior to this class I never thought much of creative writing. It was something you do in a Junior high english class and forgot shortly after the school year ended. Throughout this semester I’ve learned and incorporated different writing techniques into my essays and have evolved as a writer. Methods such as paragraphs breaks and lyric writing were foreign to me before I took this course, but I plan to use them more frequently. I will also continue to work on punctuation usage outside of commas. The Em Dash is steadily becoming a favorite, simply for the aesthetics it adds to the paper. With every new draft I could visually see my writing improving which has made me want to continue developing more creative writing skills. Hopefully you enjoy my final installment of the semester.

Enjoy your summer!

Xo,

Cass

  1. Cass,

You did some great work from drat to revision here.–I wish we could have heard you present on it.

I love the way you manage the sections, and how they’re connected loosely but meaningfully. Very lyrical–and I think you strike a great balance between looseness and connectivity. That’s not always easy to do.

The additions of the interviews with your dad and Krystle are terrific. I like how you handle both differently, with your dad’s written more as a scene and Krystle’s being more like–well, like a poem or kind of stream of conscious-y. The differences somehow just work. The piece flows through all the shifts in style and perspective, and keeps the reader both engaged and on her toes. I like it!

I feel like your concluding part is a little too quick–maybe too “pat.” By which I mean, a sort of resolution falls into place too easily. I think the tension that you start off the concluding section with–your regret about how you responded to your sister’s accusations in the first section–should have more play in your conclusion. Maybe another scene of you interacting with friends could help paint a picture of the tensions at the core of our different connections in life, and what they mean to us.
