Bonnaroo 2012

Bonnaroo is a music and arts festival that takes place every year on a farm in Tennessee. I like to think of it as this generation’s Woodstock and from what I’ve read, that’s exactly what it is. For four days every year, hundreds of people come together to rock out, get the creative juices flowing and chill out on the good vibes going around. I’m going to Bonnaroo for the first time this year and excited doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel.

Bonnaroo was started in 2002 and has been going strong ever since. The festival tries to find artists from almost every alternative genre of music for all of it’s stages (there’s tons of stages). People are expected to camp out on the concert grounds if they aren’t staying at a hotel. What’s so special about it is that people make nice little communities with their tents,  which is pretty cool. What makes this event special for me is that this is going to be my first time travelling without any of my family members (I’m going with my best friend). We’re planning on renting a tent because we agreed that if we tried setting up a tent of our own, we’d fail miserably (we’d be better off sleeping in mud). Some of the acts coming to perform (who I’m most excited for) are: Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Shins, The Roots, Aziz Ansari, Mac Miller, Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar and tons of others.

Sounds dope right?

End of winter

This weekend I got to do something I haven’t done in several months: take my dad’s car out for a drive. He got it as, in my opinion, he was going through his midlife crisis last spring and on a perfectly normal day in late May of last year I came home to find a… unique car in my parking spot: the Chevy SSR. It was the first time I had ever seen a purple convertible pickup truck and I have not seen another one since. When I walked into my house I was greeted by my dad and mom having an argument, for some reason she didn’t agree with his purchase. However as time went on my family got used to the car and my dad drove it nearly every day. That is, until the fall came.

The SSR comes with a tiny issue, it has a blind-spot the size of medium sized house from the left side when the roof is up. While this is fine in the spring and summer as the weather is quite nice, when fall comes around it gets a little chilly and uncomfortable to drive around with the roof down. I learned this the hard way as my dad started taking the SSR out less and less and began increasingly to take my car. By the end of October we had seemed to have switched cars and I had drawn the shorter straw. I have spent most of fall and the entire winter with a car that is a pain to drive on a cold day and one that requires an ungodly amount of gas to function. But that is about to change.

With the temperature warming up, I have a feeling that I will be switching cars with my dad yet again in a short amount of time. So earlier today (Sunday) I decided that I would start spring a little early and take the SSR out for a drive with the roof down. I called a friend and we were soon out and about, driving around in a convertible, blasting obnoxiously loud music- you always hate the people who do that until you get a chance to become one. We drove around for a while until it was time for me to get my hockey bag and head on to my game. As I was leaving home my dad commented on how nice the weather was, to that I replied, “Winter is ending. I guess that means you’ll be wanting your car back.” He looked at me and said, “You know it.” Chevy SSR

Reading Log: Johnson “The Autobiography of an ex-colored man”

Today I want to focus on the piece from “The Autobiography of an ex-colored man” which we read this week.  I enjoyed reading the autobiography. Besides being well written, it contains episodes of the author’s real life.

Black and white has always been a contrast to each other. Fortunately, under the present scheme of society this image is vanished. However, if we go back in the early twentieth century, notoriously, the contradiction between black and white had greatly existed. James Weldon Johnson wrote “The Autobiography of an ex-colored man” in 1912. It was written during the time of the first great migration which occurred between 1910 and 1930. During that comparatively short period of time many African-Americans migrated from the South of the United States to the North to try their fates. The whole world knew about the promising prosperity of the post Reconstruction era with the booming of the Harlem Renaissance in the early twentieth century in the North. New York City was one of the largest cities that “warmly” accepted African-American migrants from the South. The “ex-colored man”, whose name stays unknown, was one of the many migrants.

The opening of the story where the author describes New York as “the most fatally fascinating things in America” is very tempting. I believe that it still remains nowadays. The “enchanted spot” is compared to a “great witch”, who is constantly enticing all newcomers. The “dread” power of the city affects everybody in different ways, some people who lose get frustrated with their lives while others who win get a chance to live in prosperity. The ex-colored man is not an exception of this effect. For some inexplicable reasons the young mulatto man felt that he became an integral part of the stimulating power of the “great” city. “I felt that I was just beginning to live”, he utters when he came to New York for the first time.

I like the way the narrator jumps from the addiction to live in New York City to a gambling game. I assume that these two absolutely different things may have an intercept. In fact, living in the city might be a risky game for one who decided to fate his destiny, but the game pays off at the end of the day. The “ex-colored man” is one of the “black fellows” who tries his destiny and wins.

Notoriously, hate and racism existed in the beginning of the twentieth century between the two main races. Yet, “dark” men managed to demonstrate their “natural endowment” through the beautiful and intricate rhythms of the “ragtime music”. That was the time when Harlem Renaissance was prosperously booming. “Black fellows” were able to prove to “white imitators” that they might be better off than “whites” thought they were.

I believe, that the period of time between 1910 and 1930 is very important in American history, in American literature and in American culture in general. It was the time when the first step toward the elimination of racism in the United States was taken.

NYC in Spring

Now that Daylight Savings Time is in effect, the city its starting to have a springlike feel to it. Spring, especially late spring, and into the beginning of summer is my favorite time of year because the weather is perfect and also because my birthday is in early May 🙂 But the end of winter and beginning of spring, along with the time change, marks a different period in the city IMO.

Today, I went for a long walk in my neighborhood of downtown Brooklyn, all the way through DUMBO and into Cobble Hill. I went grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s, picked up dry cleaning, and bought items from the pharmacy. Normally, I find these mundane tasks boring and a drag. But today there was a vibrancy to the sunshine and all the people moving about seemed to lend everyone an extra step. Everything was teeming with possibility.

Some complain about losing an hour; but for me much was gained. I can sense the spring/summer approaching and am excited as always for ‘summer in the city.’

First World Pains (isabelle wityk)

Ok this is embarrassing, I am very late on this blog post- I do have an excuse but it kind of a terrible one…but I might as well tell you anyways.  My phone broke on Sunday. I know I know how could my phone breaking and my blog post have anything to do with each other? Well I write down my assignments and dates in my planner and my phone but I never look at my planner., I only get alarms from my phone reminding me to do things and when to do them. Needless to say I’m a completely reliant of my phone, regardless of how much I bad mouth it. So it breaking was like the end of the world, however my phone was hanging on by a thread to begin with so I can’t say it came as much of a surprise.

I have been planning on getting an iPhone for some time now, but I had to wait until I got my first check which comes in a week. But in the world we live in, living without a phone is living in complete isolation as sad as that it. So my mom agreed to spot me the money and I finally went to go meet up with someone, with my friend so I wouldn’t get robbed (which took about two hours to convince him to come with me). And we made it about 3/4th of the way to sheepshead bay when the guy we were meeting up with said he sold the phone.  So now I was phoneless in Brooklyn, with no idea my blog post was late. I don’t know about you but this is like the end of the world to me… the more I complained the more I realized how much of a walking first world problem I am.

Literally everything I complain about is a first world problem, “should I get coffee or tea? I’m so tired but my stomach hurts” or “I hate typing can we please just Skype?” Everything that’s wrong with my life Is such a first world pain its ridiculous, and I’m not rich- it’s not like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6Hgdic5jls. But I never thought I would succumb to this wave of technology so quickly and so deeply. I mean losing my phone is one thing but having my entire life just stop because of it is something really really sad in my eyes. We all live on this worldwide playground of the internet, not realizing how much control it has over us, how much power one could have over you is they had your “life” in their possession.  I didn’t do an assignment I was completely aware of because I lost my reminder. And yet, here I am telling you about losing my phone and no being able to do an assignment for my college education, again just reinforcing how much we don’t realize we have, and how much we complain about it. Or at least I do. I’m getting an education most people don’t have the resources for, with a phone most people couldn’t dream to buy, in a world that only some people have the access to. I don’t know how I got here or how to get out, or if I even want to get out, this is just some food for thought.

Ideal Essay

My opinion of an ideal essay is somewhat similar to the typical essay that most students use for school. An essay should consist of a central theme as well as details that support this theme, whether it is formal, informal, informative, or opinion essays. All essays should have a central theme and not be random ideas one after another. An essay shouldn’t be confined to the structures of an ideal essay. I’ve learned that essays need a one body paragraph introduction which includes the thesis, three supporting body paragraphs and one concluding paragraph. I find that so constricting.  An essay should be however many pages the writers wants it to be to the extent that it fully explains the idea the writer is trying to convey. A one paragraph introduction? I find that sometimes one or two sentences is enough for the introduction. Whenever I write an introduction to an essay, I would usually have to make it more “fancy” and add more sentences to it just to fit the criteria of a paragraph. The number of paragraphs in the body should not be limited. The amount of paragraphs should be sufficient in supporting the idea, but it should still be structuralized (if that’s a word). What I mean by that is the paragraphs should be grouped. If more than one paragraph illustrates the same idea, then these paragraphs should be one after another rather than in another order. Lastly, all essays need a conclusion to summarize up the essay. If you don’t have a conclusion, its like a movie not having an ending.  Kind of like the movie Inception. If anyone’s seen it I know you went like “WTF” or “Omg” at the “end”.
Anyways. My idea of an ideal essay is similar to the standard essay except that there are no constrictions on writing the essay. As long as an essay has a central theme, supporting details, and a conclusion, it’s a good essay. It doesn’t matter how long each paragraph is, or how many paragraphs there are, as long as it is well organized.

Blog Post 2- ESSAYS: Friend or foe?

I’ve had a pretty on and off relationship with writing essays throughout my life. I sucked at writing in middle school. Then, I got better and surprised everyone when I got a 96 on my English regents when I was in high school. Then I entered the realm of college and I thought to myself “The &%#*? These essay writing assignments are gonna chew me up spit me up and come back to haunt me.” Sure enough, I started learning how to write effectively. Sure the first essay grades broke my heart. But with each essay and each rewrite, I saw a change in the way I write.

I used to write essays with the intention of impressing the teacher that was grading it. I learned that selecting a thesis that pertains to me as an individual or at least one that contains my truthful perspective and opinion can drastically change the way I write. Now, writing essays is more like ” how do I put my thoughts down in a way that makes sense and at the same time projects MY voice?” So my type of “friendly” essay assignment wouldn’t tie me down to a specific thesis, rather it would let me construct my own from a general topic.

My type of essay

What kind of essay do I like to write… No matter how long it needs to be, I enjoy writing about my experiences the most. The biggest reason may be that I have unlimited knowledge of myself, well more than anyone else. As people say, “people love talking about themselves.” Like many other people, talking or writing about a subject you do not know, or lack knowledge of, is difficult. It puts me in a comfortable position when I’m writing these essays and I find myself exceeding the required length of the paper. Besides this, I also enjoy opinion essays. For example, having two different sides and choosing one to side with and argue my point. I find it enjoyable to do research on a specific topic. Especially because I learn things that I have never expected to along the way. When I do research, I tend to fall off path at some point and researching completely different yet relevant to the focused topic. However, I still learn from it and also bring a different aspect to the paper. Since our English class focus is on New York, I imagine writing a paper on MY New York. Maybe we will, maybe we won’t.

Nicki Who?

Hey guys, hope u had a great weekend, I know I did. Well recently on E ! one night I was watching episodes of keeping up with the kardashians(which I am obsessed with by the way) and in the commercials I saw a sneak peak of the talk show chelsea lately on E! and nicki minaj was the guest apperance.
I was really impressed with some of the topics that came up so I searched it up online to find the whole video. Luckily, i found it. While watching the video, I connected it with the topics that we dicussed in class.  In class we watched many videos of male rappers  and saw a couple of female rappers and compared and contrasted it. As we all know the industry is often seen as a male dominant industry and in this video nicki minaj and chelsea touches some of these issues and how despite that she reached success. Hope u guys enjoy!
