Reflective Writing Log

I cannot believe that we are so close to the end of the semester. The time passed so quickly, didn’t it? It was a very interesting and challenging semester for me. I remember we discussed in class a few weeks ago what is a good essay. Also, I remember saying that a good essay is when the writer truly cares what she or he writes about. This is what led me to write about Lorde’s poem because there are still injustices in our society that people should stand up to fearlessly. For my final essay I picked the poem “Power” by Audre Lorde. For some reason it caught my attention from the very first time I read the poem. I am still in the process of polishing up my final paper. The meaning behind the poem pushed me into thinking about the problems that the society faced at the time when the poem was written, the 1960s.

Overall the final essay was a very challenging, but mostly interesting project. I still have a couple of days to finish the paper and make it as good as possible. To me this paper was challenging because I had to look beyond the meaning of words and sort of read “in between the lines” what the author was trying to say through the poem. Audre Lorde believed that the purpose of her poems in general was to “give name to the nameless so it can be thought”. Indeed, the main purpose of any poem is to give a base to contemplate its implicit meaning behind the words. In the poem “Power”, for instance, the author calls people to stand up against abuse of power in the society at the time. Through horrifying examples the author makes the readers face boldly the reality of injustices instead of keeping silent.

I have to admit that it was also a very interesting project because after doing a careful research on the subject matter I saw a couple of different reviews by critics who commonly agreed that the abuse of power ends when people will not settle for silence. Ultimately, it took decades for people to see the clear meaning of Lorde’s poetry. However her goals as an author and civil rights activist were achieved because the public faced the fears of unjust society from the past and refused to remain silent any more. The time to speak for the majority of people began. People realized and learned that with the power in their hands they can only make a difference together.

Reflective Writing Log – Digital Essay

So, Natalie & I have been running around Manhattan like two crazy chickens without heads all weekend. We’re almost done recording… and I’ve already started editing. Tomorrow we’re planning on going to Times Square, and Madison Square Garden. We’ve already gone to Union Square, the Flat Iron District, Wall Street, the Promenade, and a few other places. We’ve met tons of interesting people and seen such random but fascinating things. This project has turned out to be like a mini trip around new york from a natives eyes’. The video has actually been a lot of fun, it’s probably the most enjoyable project I’ve done all year… (P.S. Hope you grade the video)

On the other hand I’m not that confident with my paper. Professor Kaufman told me that I’m writing the next Ginsberg novel (which I take as a compliment) … but that’s not good since it’s only a 7 page paper. This is the first paper that I know exactly what my thesis, purpose and motivation are based around…. but I just feel constricted condensing it down to 7 pages. I never thought I’d say this but I wish I had more room to write aha! … After the one on one meetings with Professor Kaufman I was able to more narrowly focus my paper on how Ginsberg’s style of writing corresponded to his political methods and was inspired by them. I’m just a bit nervous with the whole revision process, /i really hope I do well with this paper because it’s something I’m extremely passionate about.

Anyways I thought I’d post some images fro mine and Natalie’s tour around NY so far…

Reflective Writing

I’m not sure what we are supposed to be writing for this blog, but I’ll give an update about the third paper and the digital essay. I’m still in the process of revising my third paper, and I still find this one the most difficult. The fact that the paper is very general makes it harder for me, since I wasn’t given a specific direction. I fear that everything I’m writing is irrelevant or just fluff in the paper, and I can’t afford to have that since I won’t have time to revise it when we get it back. The good news is I know what’s lacking in my thesis, so that will at least be fixed.

I’m actually very hopeful and excited about my digital essay. I’m working with Bianca since Professor Kaufman suggested it would fit well, and it’s been a lot of fun collecting the data for the video. We’ve met a lot of crazy, funny people in the process of recording. We’ve also had the opportunity to look closely at a lot of areas in the city that locals tend to ignore since they’re so used to seeing them everyday. Once it is put together, I think it’ll be a really good video. If it is, I’m hoping it counts towards our grades. I would definitely be happy if it boosted our paper’s grade.

Digital Essay Thoughts

For the digital essay I am panning on doing something centralized around the theme of gentrification or neighborhoods and how they shape culture and every day living. I’d possibly like to develop upon the theme of gentrifications of the ghetto and how not so nice neighborhoods affect social development. On this research paper I’d like to focus centrally on the poem Mugging by Allen Ginsberg. I’d also like to possibly mimic the thought of a walk about poem in the form of a digital essay to create a correspondence between the two.
I think that I’d also like to incorporate new school form of poetry in order to show how Ginsberg inspired the movement a decade later. I’d like to create a fragmented video in order to copy the stylistic writing of Ginsberg. What attracted me most to this poem were the fragment sentences. That is why I’d like to compose a video that is pieced together by other clips to create one coherent message.

Novel

The poem I chose illustrates the story of a seventeen year-old experience during what could be a party or a gathering with his/her friends. I think we have all experience something similar and can relate to the message it delivers which is experience is the best teacher. It’s called Novel by Arthur Rimbaud.

This is a very general theme, and I believe that is the goal of this paper. However, I’m still deciding what to do for the digital part of this project. Do we have to narrate the poem during the video? or is that optional?

Digital Essay

For my digital essay I plan on making a video about the relationship I have with New York City. Through this video I want to show everything the city has to offer and why it’s truly the best city on the planet. I also want to show the things about the city that we (its citizens) take for granted. I want to show every nook and cranny. Why? Because I love every corner of this city.

I’m having a little trouble thinking of a good way to deliver this idea. I was thinking about making a video of me walking through the city but I’m not sure how well that will deliver my message. I want to make my message more universal though I don’t really know how. Do you think if I included more people in my video it would achieve that?

Digital Essay

I’ve mentioned before that I wanted to use the “Mayhem Poets” for my pressentation. At first I thought I wanted to use their poem “What you want?” But I think I’ve changed my mind and now want to use their poem “Martin Luther Queen”.

I’m not exactly sure about what it is I want to do with the digital essay and I am open to suggestions.

I was thinking of making a type of slide show or mini animated movie that is relative to the topic while having audio of the poem playing in the background.
