The five principles of New Media are as followed:
- Numerical Representation
- All New Media art works have some sort of numerical coding. They can be manipulated and described with an algorithm.
- Modularity
- New Media is made up of many samples which makes a unique final work.
- Automation
- Because of the first and second principles, Media art works are allowed to automated many of the operations involved in it’s creation.
- Variability
- There may not be one final version of a work. In New Media, there is the opportunity for many final outcomes. This is also because of the first and second principles.
- Transcoding
- Like principles three and four, principle number five is also because of the first and second principles – this being the ability for New Media works to be turned into computer data.
