In this reading, the quote that stand out the most to me was “A cell for citters to cit in.” McLuhan refers to the idea of putting things in an organized, in order, and categorized way, and having control over them, so that things are more manageable, or we can think about assigning people functions (sit here, do this, be this, etc.), but this idea no longer works well in today’s electronic world like the net, TV, or even digital media. We grew up in a system where most things are already classified, like people in jobs roles, students in classroom, music in genres, etc. We used to classify music into genres like classical, pop, rock, jazz, where each one focuses on that same genre, but now, an artist can release a track or an album that blends different styles like trap, Latin, indie. Another example that is a bit controversial is gender identity. For a long time, our society has tried to classify people into two roles: male or female. These were traditionally fixed, but now people can explore identities through communities, platforms, etc. Those enclosures are being broken down, as are non-binary, genderfluid, trans, people who exist outside of the old constrains. In the world we live in, people express themselves in so many ways that there is no way to force them to do, be or want something they are not, and we are constantly changing every day, hour, minute, and second. Therefore, currently, the internet and digital media cannot function in the same way since it is impossible to divide them, because the electronic world is messy and always changing. Information is everywhere all at once, and now we can learn on YouTube, TikTok, or other platforms, not just in school. This quote is important to me because it reminds me of the chaos we live in, but also validates it. I always feel the pressure to “fit” into certain categories, like what I study, what I believe, what my future should look like, but these categories don’t stop us because we live in a world that demands something more flexible, more human, and more creative. In conclusion, what I am trying to say is that environment shape behavior as internet shape our behavior, our thoughts, our plans and we have to accept the nature of the world we live in, let things flow, and not just focus too much on things that are “fixed”, because a finance student who is also an artist, or a mathematician who writes poems.
