Tada! The final piece

Wow! Can you say hard work and technical difficulties. There is one great lesson I learned from preparing this book, don’t use Baruch printers and make sure you have different options of companies to print from.

The concept of my book was to create a poem book based on Haiku poetry. And each poem that was chosen would allow the readers to interpret the poems freely and as they like. The poems required to have an image as their background. My book is based on 15 pages front and back. Images were used as the main background of the poems, but colors for the fonts and other page backgrounds as well. I used brown as the overall book color and white with black for the font.

When it comes to deciding on the binding style, be prepared. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! I definitely learned that. With practice comes better work. I am happy about the Design I chose for the book, although more emphasis will be have to be placed on the binding of it. I went along with a Japanese Stitch binding.

You can contact me via this blog or email directly at [email protected]–if you are interested in my book. I plan to revise my book and send to blurb. I would like to have a better quality book copy for myself. And others are invited to purchase the book.

In the process…

Along the way and with the helpful feedback from my classmate, I have been progressing on my book. I have made some changes to the design of the book cover and layouts. So far I have kept the same fonts and background color for my book. The hardest part for me during this phase is trying to create the designs of each poem page.

Final Book

Although I had created a brainstorming list for my final book, the decision was still difficult. But after some thinking, I decided what I love best. I love to read poetry, and I have written some poems. Some of my poems were published on my high school year book. Not as popular to the public, but definitely popular to my school mates. And I finalized on making a poem book. One of the things that interested me was Haiku poems. When I first began reading them, I didn’t understand them. Maybe because they are limited to 5-7-5 type of verse. But I read more and tried to analyze them to what I thought. And I ended getting more intrigued about this poem book.

So attached you will find a pdf of my rough draft.

My trip to Printed Matter

Ok so here’s a brief analysis of my trip to Printed Matter and the books I chose. Enjoy!

1. Title: There is Xerox on the Insides of your Eyelids

Author: Rich Jacobs

Price: $16.00

Binding: glue bound

Style: paperback, black-and-white style book

Printing Method: photocopy

Edition Size: 1000

It caught my attention in a very creative tone. The cover of the book is great, I thought, because of the colors and the title. And the title itself catches attention because it reels you in and you want to see or understand how there is Xerox on your eyelids. Although  this is what would come to mind when looking at the title; after getting more into the inside of the book, you realize what it’s about. An art exhibition displaying “skate zine” and xerox art with stamps and mail, is interesting to me.

2. Title: I’m a Fan of Sin

Author: David Sandlin

Price: $25.00

Binding: Staple bound

Style: paperback book style

Printing Method: screenprint

Edition Size: 5 AP

I liked this book because of the title. The colors, drawing, and typography used for this paperback book style publication represent what is the book is about. This artistic book seems to originate from the artists background.

3. Title: Going against the Zodiac Force

Author: Jamie Felton

Price: $8.00

Binding: Staple bound

Style: Paperback book

Printing Method: Screen print

Edition Size: 50

The artist tells her story life through images and artistic work. As if it was a journal or biography of the things that impacted her life the most. I think the title is great based on her work in the book.

4. Title:  Water Melon Manicure

Author: Donna Chung

Price: $10.00

Binding: Staple bound

Style: Paperback book-style in black-and-white

Printing Method: photocopy

Edition Size: 50

I enjoy looking at books in black-and-white because you have more imagination to work with. You can image what the actual colors were of the image and that is why I liked Donna Chung’s book, Water Melon Manicure. Her usage of visuals and textures are very interesting in that I look at them and can image more than what I can see in the image.

5. Title: New York: Everything Reminds me of something

Author: Sissa Marquardt and Markus Schmolz

Price: $42.00

Binding: Sewn bound

Style: color book-style publication

Printing Method: offset-printed

Edition Size: not mentioned

I always like to look at how artist and writers view New York City. There is so much occurring in New York that each person living in this city has their own experiences and perspectives. With “New York: Everything reminds me of something” that is the mindset of two artists and arts that occurs in New York.

6. Title: We are all collage

Author: Laura Foxman

Price: $20.00

Binding: accordion

Style: color paperback book style

Printing Method: inkjet printing

Edition Size: 100

It can be said true that everything that occurs in the world becomes a piece or part of a bigger picture. And that is why I liked Laura Foxman’s accordion book-style publication because of the ideas and images she perceives.
