NY Art Book Fair 2010

October 7, 2009

This was my first time going to PS1 MOMA. I’ve been to MOMA on 5th Ave countless times, but I haven’t visited PS1. Once I arrived, I felt like I was at a party. It was a very nice day so lots of people were outside eating and there was a band playing too. The books were fun to browse through. Some were ordinary and some were extra ordinary. Out of all the books I’ve seen, there were a couple that really caught my eye.

your-house

Your House
By Olafur Eliasson
2006
Edition of 200, signed
$15,000
This book caught my eye because of the complexity in the pages. There are 400 laser cut pages. I was not able to feel or touch the book since it was in a case. It is a pretty big book in landscape view. The design is simple; just plain white paper. Each page is complex; with a laser cut design of the interior of a house. The precision and details are astonishing.

Another summer
By Terri Weifenbach
2009
$45
This book is a simple idea and done very well. It’s a small hardcover book. The cover is wrapped with blue cloth. It is 8 hole stitching with a couple of signatures glued together. The inside pages are matte quality and have full bleed images from a summer experience. The title Another Summer doesn’t sound very interesting. It sounds like it will be about just another typical non-exciting summer, but the images were more than typical. There are a variety of images from people to objects. It’s a great showcase of photographs.

OK OK OK
By Mike Slack
2002, autograph copy
$100
The binding of this book was the same as the other book Another Summer. The cover this time was wrapped in yellow cloth and a white material covered the spine. There was a another piece of paper glued on top of the cover. It looked like a polaroid. Throughout the entire book, this polaroid style is used. Each page had one polaroid image in the center. Even the back cover had a polaroid picture. It’s consistency within the pages and cover made this book successful.

Don’t Smile Now… Save It For Later
By Wassink Lundgren
2008
$50
This book had a 10-hole stitching with multiple signatures glued together. This book stood out to me first because of the bright yellow, smooth, vinyl-like softcover. Then the concept behind this book was even more intriguing. It is full of photographs.

These photos were made using a mirror and a photobook. I paid £4 in the following booths for a picture of the view…
-Wassink Lundgren

These booths were at places in London. The image quality isn’t great, but that emphasizes the “hidden cameras”.

popup-book2

How God Talks in His Sleep and Other Faulous Fictions
Designed by Tony Calzetta
2009, edition of 45 copies
$5,300
This book was really big and colorful. It was in a black box and opens up as a book sculpture. It is hardcover and has an accordion fold on the sides. The center is back of the book. When opened up, it looks like a big pop up book. There are trees, mountains and other abstract things. The pop ups are made of construction paper. It is really fun and different, but so expensive! This book is handmade though.

absence

Absence
By J. Meejin Yoon
2003
$30
This is my favorite one! At first glance, I didn’t understand it. It is a small, all white, no words book. It is pretty thick though. Every page is die cut and the entire book is 120 pages. At the very begging of the book, you will only see a small hole. The following pages are also holes at the very same spot. At a certain point you will start seeing two squares and that goes on for a little over 100 pages. Then at the very last page, you see the two squares fitting in to some sort of map. After a while, I realized this represented the Twin Towers. The small circle represented the antenna on one of the twin towers and each page of the squares represented one floor of the Twin Towers. Now I understand the title Absence and its content.
