Pop up book

November 19, 2009

My final project is still a pop up book. I decided to change the size to be smaller because of the limited resources of paper I have. I’m trying to not violate the grain of the paper.

I am doing an ABC pop-up book. I liked doing the ABC pamphlet book, so I am going to do a pop up one now. It’s not going to be the same design at all. The letter “P” page right now has a pig that will pop up. In some pages I will try to make the letter itself pop up. Here are some of the pop ups I’ve played around with:

The pig and flower were templates that I found. The trees I drew up in illustrator and cut it out. There are two layers. One blue sheet in the background and when you open it up, the trees layer comes out. I’m thinking of putting another layer in between to make it more three dimensional.

EAB

November 19, 2009

I went to the EAB book fair last year for fun. It was at a different place. Last year, there seemed to be more space even though it was just one hallway (“The Tunnel”). This year’s space feels a lot more cluttered, but there were still some great stuff to see.

Printing and Binding Prices

November 5, 2009

The first I place I went to was somewhere really close by to where I work. It’s called Kwik Copy on 37th between Madison and 5th.

I really do not like this place. The guy was very rude. I would ask him something and he would talk to someone else for a few minutes and come back to me… So he had said that an 11×17 would cost $5 because the minimum purchase was $5! Then I started to ask him about the trimming and folding. He was rude again and said he wouldn’t answer my shopping list. I had to have a project that I actually need to be printed for him to give me prices. So I left.

My next stop was a staples on 34th. The address is 16 E 34th Street.

The customer service there was so much better! An 11×17 double sided color print is $3.58. To trim a stack of paper is $2 per cut. So if I had to trim 4 sides on a paper, that would be $8. Kind of pricey. To fold would cost 3 cents per page, not per fold. So even if I had a three fold brochure, it would still cost 3 cents. Cost to do a pamphlet stitch is 25 cents extra. The binding, which includes the plastic spiral, wire spiral would cost an extra $4.62 (20-30 pages). They have a special offer going on now until November 14. Staples reward card members get 50% back in the mail for all these printing services. I think it’s a pretty good deal. I have a rewards cards and it’s free to get one if anyone was interested.
