Final book
December 18, 2009
For my final book, I did an abc book with some pop ups and cut outs. The book’s style is simple, but fun. I tried to stick to that, but doing a pop up brings too many ideas to my head so I had to narrow everything down. I did a lot of trial and error. I thought up my own designs and also looked at other pop ups that I liked and tried to do something similar. I looked back at my abecedarium project and used some of the ideas there (jigsaw, umbrella).
I tried to stick with a limited color scheme. Black, white, green, and yellow (rainbow page is an exception).
This is the cover. I used a book cloth. The color is pearl white (from Talas). I like this because it’s simple, but there is a metallic finishing to it and the texture is soft.
This is the first pop up spread. It pops up as a circular structure with ABC hidden inside.
Next is the dove. Just white.

Lemon, Lime. When you start flipping the page open, it turns from a lemon to a lime.
Map, MTA, Manhattan. I like doing these kind of cutouts. It reveals something hidden underneath.
Nail. A nail going through a wall. I decided to use the green I used for the flower page.
OFF, ON. It took me a while to get this working. I really wanted the O to be like a light switch. It would say OFF with the O grayed and then when you flip the “switch” it will turn green and say ON.
Popcorn. The popcorn pops up, representing the o in popcorn.
Queen. Another cut out.
Rainbow. This isn’t necessarily a rainbow shape, but represents the colors of the rainbow.
Stairs
Telescope. Just pull it up and look through the hole. You will see outer space. I think this page doesn’t go as well with the rest because it diverges from the color scheme a bit. I really wanted to use space images because what else do you use a telescope for? I also really like astronomy.
Umbrella. Half of the umbrella is cut out revealing smaller umbrella pattern.
VW. When flipping the page, the V will turn into a W.
Xray.
Yarn. A very fat Y is cut out completely and yarn is in the background. I wish I had real yarn.
Zebra.
THE END.
The aftermath of part of my room. I also took over the living room for a bit. My room was a mess two weeks ago from all the packing and moving since we were getting new floors (1st and 2nd floor). That’s over now, but my room has become a mess again. Time to clean.
PS I do not like working with glue! The entire book was assembled with glue. Jade 403.
