Michael Lee Photography; Photo Collection

This is my complete book. It is a collection of my photography. This book uses a hard cover, and hard cover binding. The size is called large landscape, which is 13″x17″. It uses a image wrap, and no dust jacket. The reason I came up with making this book for the final is because I needed something like this to show off my work as a freelance photographer. This book has a collection of many photos, including wedding, events, portraits, animals, objects, landscape, etc. One of the most challenging task when making this book was choosing where to put what pictures. Because I did not want this book to feature any specific type of picture, I decided to place the photos randomly. In indesign, I placed each category of pictures as far from each other as possible. I ordered this book from Blurb as I mention in the previous post. I find the quality of the book to be excellent. The paper (premium paper) used to make this book feels fantastic and looks beautiful. Although ordering this book from Blurb was a bit pricy, I think it’s worth it.

Idea for Final Project

As I mentioned in class, I would like to make a book for my photo portfolio. It will use a hard cover, and a hard cover binding (if thats allowed). As for the paper, I will use a semigloss paper, similar to those of textbook paper. All the pages in the book will contain no text, just full page pictures. As for the cover, I will use a picture of the backside of myself holding a camera or something like that. The book will be titled Michael Lee Photography.

Assignment: Stab Sewn Binding Book

photo photo-1photo-2

This is the book for using stab sewn binding technique.I used an insert of a japanese fashion magazine called Cool Trans to make this. It has a matte texture to the book block, and a glossy thicker paper for the cover. I chose this because the insert has great content regarding fashion, and i though that it would look nice in a stab sewn binding book like this one. I used dental floss as the thread. As for the cover, it was hard to find something as thick that can match the content, but i was able to find another magazine cover that will work.

NY Art Book Fair

NY Art Book Fair

When I first walked into the yard of P.S.1, it did not feel like it was a public school. There were large structures in the middle of the yard, and many people sitting around, reading, chating, and drinking.

As I walked inside the school, I was confused as to where to go find some published works. I soon noticed that there are different fairs in different rooms. Some rooms are filled with many books, others one or two. I arrived at the fair around 5:30 pm on Sunday, and some people were getting ready to leave. Yet there were still many people inside.

The setup of the rooms were pretty interesting. It has a very artistic feel in every room. There were posters, neon lights, projections, and walls filled with hanging books and newspaper. I saw some wearing costumes. At the end of the fair, I too just want to relax outside in the yard.

photo2

The first published work that I found interesting is Autobahn Flaggen by Sechsundzwanzig. It is a paperback book with a transparent cover. This publication was $45, and it used a perfect binding. I found the cover to be very unique, similar to the one we saw in class. As for the content, it has many pictures and a bunch of text that I didn’t read.

photo3

The second book that I saw at the fair is titled LOL!.  It is a paperback book, with a warnout black cover. It used a saddle stitch binding, with a piece of paper covering the side of it. The book is made up of pictures, each page with a person laughing. There were no text in this book. I find this book pretty interesting because it has a collectiong of different celebraties laughing out loud. This book is $20.

photo4

The next publication that I found interesting is called Michelle Grabner’s Black Circle Paintings Metalpoint Drawings and Monoprints, by Michelle Grabner. It used a hard, gloss cover, using a hard cover book binding. This book is $40. It used a semi gloss paper as the book block. I find this book interesting because it contained structures and pictures that looked like circles. Also, I like its simplistic layout of black and white.

photo5

Another publication that I found interesting is Lou Reed’s New York by Lou Reed. It is a hard cover book, using a hard cover binding. The text block used a semi gloss paper. This is a photo book of New York through the eyes of Lou Reed. Each page contains a full picture of a location in New York. I like this publication because I like the photography  of Lou Reed. This book is $60.

photo6photo

Here is a book called The Reporters of BBC Website by Nick Crowe. It is a soft cover book, using a perfect binding. The paper are made of think semi gloss paper. I find this book very unique. It shows pictures of people (reporters) in a sort of low resolution form. You need to step back in order to see the person clearly. This is a very interesting publication. There was no price on this book.

photo

This publication is called Lovely Date Issue V: Numbers. It is a soft covered book made with very light paper, soft covered. It used a saddle stitched binding. The book block is made with light paper as well, similar to regular copy paper. I find the content interesting, show pictures of different creatures with numbers written all over them. The price of this publication was $15.

Printed Matter Assignment

The first publication that I saw was Two Wounds, by Chris Dikens. This publication cost $10. It was printed on matte paper with different color, about 3 by 4 inches. The binding that was used by this publication was saddle stitch binding. The publication opens from the middle, with the flaps one going up and one going down, rather then left and right. I really liked the way this publication was designed, because each page in the front was smaller then the next one, which it created a hole in the middle of the publication. It used several colored pieces of paper, and was very unique.

The second publication that I saw was New Directions in Current Practices, by Danna Vajda. This publication cost $15. This publication was printed on matte paper as well, about 5 x 6 inches. This publication was binded together by a piece of rubber band in the middle of the fold. What I liked about this publication was that it used graph paper looking paper as the pages of this publication, with drawing of celebrities and famous people. The drawings were realistic, yet the context of the publication was very abstract.

The third publication that I saw was Deer Mountain, by Kasane Nogawa. There was no price listed for this publication. It was printed on a semi-gloss paper, about 16 x 24 inches. The type of binding used was saddle stitch binding using 2 staples in the middle, similar to those of a supermarket weekly. I liked the largely printed pictures of Deer Mountain. This publication had no writing, just pictures. There were several beautiful pictures of the mountain taken by the “author”, which I enjoyed.

The forth publication that I saw was Magazine, by Mike Nelson. This publication cost $50.  It was printed on matte paper, and had many pages. The binding used by this publication was perfect binding. Each page was folded, and used only one side for printing~ similar to the Japanese publication was saw in class. What I liked about this publication was that it was another photography book. It showed only pictures of different locations, indoor hallways and room to be more specific. I find this publication to be weird and a bit scary.

The fifth publication that I saw was Then You Ask Why I Don’t Live Here Honey, How Come You Don’t Move?, by Jasper Sebastian Sturup. This publication cost $10. It used regular paper, and was about 5 x 6 inches big. The type of binding used by this publication was saddle stitch binding using thread in the center. It used a yellow cover piece to cover up the thread. I find this publication interest because it looks like a scrapbook of abstract body parts. Again, it had no writing, just pictures.

The sixth publication that I saw was India, by Charlotte Dumas. This publication was $15.  It was printed on semi-gloss paper, and was about 5 x 7 inches big. The type of binding used was saddle stitch binding using a red thread, stitching from top to bottom. I like this publication for its beautiful pictures of a white tiger. Every page in this publication are pictures of this white tiger shot from several angles. I like this because it has no words.
