NY Artbook Fair

Overall, what I saw at the event was not much different from what I saw at Printed Matter. The building was different and the way things were laid out was different (storefront v. fair, standard store v. school with outdoor court), but the actual content was very much the same.  Aside from a few notable exceptions in the books, the odd smell throughout the building, and the surprisingly large number of people present, there were not too many differences between Printed Matter’s store and the NY Artbook Fair that I could see.

All of the text in the book was in Spanish, but the pictures explained things well enough. Throughout the book, pictures were laid out on the right side pages with text on the left side pages. The pictures showed cheap household objects arranged in clever and ingenious ways to transport water from one place to another as a makeshift irrigation system.

The book was a large collection of pictures which, by themselves, wouldn’t be very interesting at all. What made this book actually interesting was how a large circle was emptied directly in the center of the book going from the front to the back. The circle going through each page drew attention to specific parts of each picture because of what was missing in the picture because of the empty circle.

The book contained several black and white pictures which, instead of filling different parts of the picture with shades of black and gray, used the style of coloring I newspapers where dots would fill in the pictures in different densities to give the illusion of shading. The front cover showed the title’s name with each word right below the other, but the back cover was completely smudged out.

The work didn’t have a name, but it had a very interesting style of organization. Instead of being bound by string or glue, the book was cut into a hexagon and opened by unfolding from each side of the hexagon in a specific sequence.

This book was shown in a glass case opened right in the middle. On each side of the book, the pages were cut out in the center so that when the book was laid flat, it looked like the inside of a house. Thcreator of this book must have paid close attention to the way this book was cut so that the pages would look as detailed as they did.

This work used a large notepad with stained pages and cutouts. With the pages curled inwards, the cutouts stuck out from the back of the pad to look like the outside of an old apartment building’s fire escape stairs. There was even a ladder hanging from the bottom that nearly reached the ground from where the notepad was held against the wall.
