Printed Matter

1.
Title: Bar Code Ronald Reagan Flipbook
Author: Omaha, NE: S. Blake. 2006
Price: $10.00
Binding style:
Printing method: Laserprint
Edition size: Unknown
I’m easily amused by flip books, so this caught my eye rather quickly. The choice of using barcodes to slowly reveal and hide Reagan’s face was amusing, but I was somewhat disappointed since I was expecting more movement from Reagan’s face.

2.
Title: Err
Author: David Shrigley
Price: $28.00
Binding style: sewn bound
Printing method: offset-printed
Edition size: Unknown
The cover sleeve caught my eye very quickly with its simplistic and almost lazy design. I’m not sure whether the fact that this sort of design caught my eye is a good or bad thing, but it was definitely more interesting to look at than many of the other works on the shelves based on the cover alone. The inside content wasn’t as interesting as the outside, however, since the pictures were somewhat cluttered and confusing.

3.
Title: Vendor Power
Author: Center for Urban Pedagogy
Price: $6.00
Binding style: Folded
Printing method: Double-sided printing
Edition size: Unknown
I don’t recall seeing any other bilingual works at Printed Matter. This seems like it would be a very functional book for street vendors because of the multiple languages it is printed in as well as the simplistic art style that makes it easy to understand what is happening in each picture. It also seems like it would be very practical since the advice it gives is actually applicable to street vendors.

4.
Title: This Is a Paper Trinket For You To Wear
Author: David Shrigley
Price: $12.00
Binding style: glue bound
Printing method: offset-printed
Edition size: Unknown
This is similar to Err in its lazy visual style. The inside of both this book and Err are largely similar with the odd drawings and short writings, although the drawings in this smaller book seemed more interesting to me (possibly because of the smaller, more focused size of the drawings). The back cover was also more interesting in that it wasn’t just a copy of the front with the word “front” replaced with the word “back”, but instead had a picture of a target with several arrows stuck in it.

5.
Title: Me Good Me Bad
Author: Annie Poon
Price: $6.00
Binding style: staple bound
Printing method: laserprint
Edition size: 150
This caught my eye for the same reason that Shrigley’s works did: A simplistic cover on the outside and a simplistic art style on the inside. I didn’t have enough time to really figure out the story in my time at the store, but it did make a bit more sense after reading the summary on the website. Although the drawings are very simplistic, they have all the necessary shapes to make certain objects and people recognizable without being so simple as to make them all look like one giant blob.

6.
Title: Famous Last Words
Author: Jim Johnson
Price: $12.00
Binding style: glue bound
Printing method: laserprint
Edition size: Open
This book was even simpler in style than the other three I mentioned, but it still works just as well for this one. The back cover caught my eye first since all the letters were just reversed from those on the front. On the inside, I was intrigued by how each page on the left only had the quoted person’s name and the right page was filled with a short quote by that person, but printed backwards. I probably wouldn’t buy the book for such a small amount of content, but it would make a nice conversation piece.
