In the dispersal of information on a global scale Wikipedia has lead the way like no other company. Despite the fact that that contributors are few they are countless users per day. The benefit is immeasurable, the model of having an online encyclopedia is now being fully adopted by the Encyclopedia Britannica and others as individuals find the ease and convenience of the internet easier to than using the information printed in books that maybe years old.

This brings up the point of relevance of information, wikis are updated regularly some even hourly, a book however is updated every 3 years on average.  The changes that can take place are enormous and information must be current to have any relevance to individuals of or our current era. The participative culture of wikis allows individuals to update these sites and keep the information fresh.

Wikis are now the way a lot of information is found from Wikipedia to wikia(a media wiki on TV shows and other entertainment interest) to medical wikis. The up-to-date nature of the site due to user use and participation allows for mass dissemination of current relevant information to the user of the wiki,the internet and the world overall.
