Narrative of Metacognition

As stated by Asimov in the essay titled “What is Intelligence, Anyway?”, Intelligence is not a guaranteed key to success nor life. Just because you do well academically does not mean you are guaranteed success. Asimov agrees with this statement by bringing up this quote taken straight from his writing, “In a world where I could not use my academic training and my verbal talents but had to do something intricate or hard, working with my hands, I would do poorly.” Asimov sums up his entire writing with this sentence. Something involving hard work without an attachment to academic studies was something he would not be able to excel in. This implies that no matter how high his intelligence or academic success was, there was still room for improvement. With just his intelligence he wouldn’t succeed. I personally agree with Asimov in his definition of the term intelligence. Intelligence isn’t something you can gain with age or physically acquire. Intelligence is a gift you are born with just like any other talent. Not everyone can juggle six balls at once, but there are a couple of talented people who can. Not everyone is born with high intelligence. Some are gifted with the ability to do hands on work which is perfectly normal. Not everyone is built to act and say the same things. I think Asimov touches on a great point about the different abilities of every individual. Some people are just better than others in certain areas, and as a society we need to be able to accept that no one is perfect and that you can’t be perfect either. I like to believe one of my many strengths is the ability to be able to stick up for myself and others when they are right and in need of defense. All my life I have wanted to be a lawyer and hopefully one day that will come true, but for now a girl can dream. Although school was a success for me, I never really had any talents. I was always focused on school work that I never had extra time on my hands to discover some of my talents. My interests include basketball, volleyball, and most importantly exercising. These are just some of my skills, but my qualities make me a completely unique individual. Nobody can have exactly what I have, and nor can I have all that they have.

My top three intelligence types as a result of the multiple intelligence survey were bodily, intrapersonal, and visual. Bodily being that I use my body to be able to solve problems just like surgeons, athletes, etc. which makes sense given that different sports are incorporated into my everyday life. Intrapersonal is the type of intelligence I think defines me most as a person. It states that I am able to make my own life decisions rationally and go through a well thought out process before making tough decisions. I like to describe myself as an overthinker and usually think through every life decision I make, which makes this statement factual to me. Lastly, the third type of intelligence the survey believed to be my top intelligence was visual. Visual intelligence is the type of intelligence for architects, engineers, and artists. They have the ability to create effective mental pictures and apply it to their work. I disagree with this being one of my top three intelligences. Given that I am no artist and don’t enjoy mapping out pictures before hand.
