Five moves of analysis: “Call Me By Your Name”

I chose to do the five moves of analysis on a book that I have read named “call me your name” the book is about a 17 year old boy named Elio who is on vacation with his family at their old villa in Italy during the summer of 1983. his father is a professor of archeology and he has a student of his named Oliver live with them during the summer. Elio begins to find Oliver quite intriguing and can’t seem to stop thinking about even he is certain that he likes girls. this book shows us our 17 year old Elio navigating his sexuality and figuring out his life and who wants to be as a teenage boy with his friends and family by his side during the year of 1983. this book can be quite controversial due to it being within the genre of LGBTQ+ and people not wanting their children to read such that a book that shows a teenager navigating himself through his sexuality.

Move 1 – Elio is a 17 year old boy who is enjoying his summer with family and friends in Italy. He then meets a student of his fathers. 24 year old Oliver who is going to be living with them throughout the summer and at first he doesn’t like it because that means he has to give up his room and give it to a total stranger to use throughout the summer which he doesn’t want. he has a crush on this one girl and tells his parents about it since he tells them everything but now that Oliver is here, he sort of butts in their conversations and he hates that he constantly says the word “later” over and over again.

Move 2 – A girl is introduced in the book after Elio and Oliver start to get closer as friends and she becomes Oliver’s love interest. they are friends with benefits if that’s what you want to call it. this is very significant in the story line because it shows Elio’s feeling for Oliver evolving now that he sees him with another person and that person is not him. although Elio can’t do anything abut it because he believes that staying put and not telling Oliver about the issue is the best thing to do rather than telling him how he feels and ruining their friendship that they have. this plays into how the storyline of the book will change later on due to this one girl.

Move 3 – in the book we know that Oliver has this constant tendency of saying the word l”later” which Elio doesn’t really like. we also notice that when Oliver is not around or if he has gone on a trip with Elio’s father, Elio seems to wonder off, not really knowing what to do with himself because Oliver is not around, or he reads a book or has conversations with his parents. Elio also seems to have this tendency of writing something that he likes about Elio or what he wants to tell Elio but he can’t in his journal. there is also this girl that Elio likes and she likes him back, Elio tends to go back and forth with the girl and Oliver as a pattern of either liking both of them or not knowing who to choose between them.

Move 4 – Elio and Oliver ride their bikes to a nearby field. they have a conversation and keep it going. since they are similar but different the want to know more about each other and continue to ask each other questions. as they’re laying on the grass they look into each other eyes and begin to make out. but Oliver pulls away. he believes that what they are doing is wrong because of their age gap and all. Elio takes this as a joke and puts his hands right on Oliver’s crotch. due to this I wonder what is going to happen next between the two of them after something so intimate just happened between these two. are they going to acknowledge the fact that both of them like each other? or are they going to keep it themselves and act as if nothing ever happened?

Move 5 – will Elio continue to keep seeing that girl after he realized he has a crush on Oliver after that intimate moment between the two of them? will Oliver keep seeing that girl after sharing an intimate moment with Elio? Is Elio going to tell his parents about what happened or is he going to keep it to himself even though he tells his parents everything? we notice that after something significant happens in the book, we wonder things are going to stay the same, evolve, or pretend to not notice a change in what’s happening around us no matter how big the moment was. this is what we wonder for Elio specifically since he just a teenage boy and doesn’t really know his way around the big world yet. he hasn’t really figured himself out yet, but we do know that he feels somewhat secure when with Oliver.

  1. I think you’ve described the book and the emotions the protagonist felt throughout this one pretty well. In my case I had similar questions while watching the movie.
