Field analysis assignment

This painting is hung up on the fifth floor of the Newman Vertical Campus building. It has a variety colors in a very abstract layout. What makes this piece interesting to me is how there is a deep red color mixed in with the dark blue, light blue and white colors. The two shades contrast with each other and are the opposite of one another. The main component for this painting are the three black shapes in the bottom half, which to me look like horns of some sort. The background for the horns is red, which is different from the rest of this piece. There are many different ways you can interpret this painting but what I think is being implied is the diversity in Baruch college as well as New York City. The different tones and shades of colors being mixed together in an abstract way fits with that implication. I question what the artists intentions were when creating this painting.

In terms of context and and background information for this piece, there isn’t much information about the artist or the time when it was made. For the genre of the painting, I would classify it as an abstract painting. There is no descriptive image of something but uses different shapes, colors, and lines to achieve the effect. I think the artist made this piece to show the diversity in the surrounding environments. A possibility for the historical circumstances could be the BLM movement during 2020. The country was very divided and this piece could show how things can oppose and contrast with each other but still work in harmony. Although it is an abstract piece, there is some organization to it. The lighter and cooler colors are all over the painting except for the bottom right corner where it is a warm color in red. I do believe this painting can represent pathos. Pathos represents emotions, which the colors being used can also represent. Overall, I think this painting is well put together which can have many different messages. What is good about this piece is that who ever sees it, will have a different interpretation then the last person.
