Marxist Criticism questions:
- How is disability represented in Frankenstein ?
- How are “normal” people or bodies constructed? How is normalcy reinforced?
- Is disability a catalyst for the narrative?
- Are people with disabilities gendered differently? As asexual? As feminized?
- In what ways do disability, gender, race, nationality, and class intersect? (M)
- Does the narrative re figure the ways we define the human body? For example, how is prosthesis or technology tied to the body, and how does this change the ways we relate to our environment? (M)
- How are disabilities like blindness tied to “truth” or deafness to communication within a literary work? What symbolism is attached to disability? (M)
The Movie “Frankenstein” was a movie that was based on science fiction and also how the world looks upon people who have disabilities. During the duration of the entire movie many characters are introduced, some of which you can see have physical disabilities, others have disabilities that are not so visible or physical but they can be seen. The movie “Frankenstein” was short in length compared to the movies of today but like the movies of today it was able to display one of its main messages which was that the world and society looks down on those who have disabilities.
In the movie “Frankenstein” disability is shown in a variety of ways the first being the apprentice to Dr.Frankenstein has a hunchback which does not allow him to stand up right therefore making his life more difficult and through every interaction he had with the doctor he was always looked down upon both literally and figuratively whenever Dr.Frankenstein spoke to his assistant he always made comments about his intellect but he would also insult his apprentice when they were first show in the lab and the apprentice seemed to be fixing something that was broken and could interfere with the experiment he Dr.Frankenstein began to yell at him to get down and he also insulted him. Dr Frankenstein also seemed to have a sort of mental illness that caused him to obsess over perfection and the creation of life the doctor seemed to exhibit signs of a god complex he believed that he alone possessed the intellect to bring life from death which is why after he had succeeded in bring his creation to life he was excited for the success of his creation he remarked “Now I know how god feels” claiming to have ascended to a level above those around him he believed he has created the superior life form . only to have his dream be shut down once he was informed by his former colleague that the brain that he implanted into frankenstein was the brain of a person who committed violent crimes their entire life after this you can see that dr.frankenstein was angry with his assistant for making such a mistake and he again insults both his intellect and his physical appearance.
Through the whole frankenstein movie the way disabilities are displayed are all shown in a way that lets you empathize for the person being shown on screen when frankenstein was playing with the young girl she was too young to comprehend the danger she was in so you could in a sense count that as a disability to see clear danger because most young children are naive and only see the good in the world. Furthermore, during the scene when the wedding seems to be happening one of the maids appears to be walking with a limp and dr.frankenstein’s father scolds her and tells her not the drop those drinks and to walk normal before people begin to judge.even though frankenstein was made to be perfect he had one major imperfection and that was his inability to communicate he could only speak with grunts and loud noises. But the most discreet disability within the entire movie was dr.frankenstein’s inability to de obsess over his work his obsession with the need to recreate human life perfectly was what got his shunned and outcast from society and that’s why he felt the need to have his work far away in a tower that only makes someone want to run away. through the duration of the movie everyone who had a disability was looked down upon by all of the characters portrayed showing that just because someone struggles more in their daily lives humans are more than likely to take pity and feel some kind of negative feelings towards that person
Frankenstein is one of the original horror films to ever come out, while during the duration of the movie you can see how those with disabilities are mistreated by those who were lucky enough to not be born with anything outside of normal during their birth even though the movie is old it manages to hit a nerve with a timeless message how the world tends to look down on those grappling with disabilities. It acts like a mirror, asking us to question those ingrained biases. its message about how we treat people with disabilities rings just as true today as it did back then.
After analyzing the particular film you chose, write one more paragraph about the horror genre in general. Why has it endured in popularity for nearly 100 years? What is behind our culture’s preoccupation with horror? What is considered scary, and why do many equate fear with entertainment?
The reason the horror genre has maintained its popularity is because horror has learned to adapt things from everyday life and dramatize them in a way that allows for simple things such as leprechauns to become creatures if the night and you also have people with great imaginations for such creepy and vile things like for example the author Stephen king all of his horror genre books are all amazing why because they make your hair rise and your skin crawl the reason the horror genre has maintained its popularity is because no matter how ridiculous the idea is it always works
This comedian, for instance, feels that horror as a genre is a Western privilege:
Why Phil Wang Hates Scary Movies | Netflix Is A Joke
Do you agree? Why/not?
i agree with his statement because there are not that many places where a horror movie like the nun or even the conjuring would do good mainly because of other countries religious outlooks as well as other countries time management
I agree that the movie demonstrates how people with disabilities are viewed in society. We should treat people with disabilities with more respect and have more sympathy toward them.
