Madison Square Park is a small area full of various memorials. The memorials vary from structures, statues, and benches created in dedication to loved ones. I believe that there could be at least 30 memorials in the park, almost every bench had a dedication engraved. In my opinion, the memorials are there to represent special bonds certain people had and to present a peaceful vibe to the public.

The  memorial I chose was a bench created as a marriage proposal. The engraving read, “Robert William Will you marry me today, and every day? I love you everlastingly ~Ana”. I thought the bench was heartwarming and a special detail, I think it was meant as an anniversary gift. Ana used the words “today, and every day” probably signifying how Robert would choose to love his wife all over again, every single day of his life.

The piece definitely reflects pathos, since it appeals to the public’s emotions. For example, when roaming Madison Square Park in search for a memorial that caught my eye, there wasn’t one that interested me enough. However, when I found this bench I immediately thought about how loving the dedication was and began to wonder about the couple. The sentiment illustrated by Ana is what truly made to memorial appealing. The bench is hidden among the rest, it took a while for me to find this particular one, yet I noticed that when people stopped to read each engraving they stayed at this one the longest, some even took pictures.

I’ve never seen a bench dedicated to ‘love’, I often see them made for those who have passed away or historical figures. The emotion portrayed by Ana is a quite endearing and thoughtful gift, if I were Robert I would love her forever and ever.
