Malcolm X Memorial Proposal

Introduction: I propose renovating the current Oval lawn at Maddison Square Park and redesigning it to be named Malcolm X lawn. I petition for this because he deserves to be commeorated for his legacy and positive contributions to the Muslim Community. Malcolm was known for being an American Muslim minister and human rights activist who was a prominent figure during the civil rights movement. A spokesman for the Nation of Islam until 1964, and a vocal advocate for Black empowerment and the promotion of Islam within the Black community. This memeorial aims to vocalize towards the local comunnity and its significance of promoting equal rights and represenation for minority groups.

Definition of the Problem: The need for a Malcolm X memorial is paramount since he fought for the civil rights movement and had major contributions toward the Muslim community. He emerged as the principal spokesman of the Nation of Islam during the 1950s and early 1960s and founded temple #7 in Harlem know named “Masjid Malcolm Shabazz”. The other memorials in madison square park fail to commeorate Muslim hisotrical figures and this gives the community limited outlook on to our values. The majoirty of the memorials resonate with many diverse groups in Manhattan, and with this memorial we can gain a new scope and highlight a symbol for Muslim people to look up to.

Explanation of the Proposed Solution: The Malcolm x memorial will be a unique space and pivotal area for commemorating him. The design will be a new oval lawn with his name engraved on the field of grass, followed by a gallery circle with lanterns that have microphones which serve to play his recorded speeches. As you walk by you will hear his famous speeches and quotes and enjoy the view of the lawn. There will be plaques and interactive panels that will provide historical quotes and features of Malcolm X.

Conclusion: The proposed memorial will seek not only to honor Malcom X but also the Muslim community that is underrepresented. This memorial will serve as the center of the park and the gateway for unity and equal rights. Among the many mouments this will be serve as the tribute for him, and his accomplishments. His name will live on and be rememmeberd in this park.
