Madison Square Park

Throughout the semester, whenever I passed by or walked through Madison Square park I never really paid attention to any of the memorials. This was the first time I went to the park and directed my attention to the monuments around me. What stood out to me the most is the amount of plaques there were on the benches. Many of them had no context just a persons name, I believe it’s special that only they would know the true meaning of it.

The memorial that stood out to me the most was the plaque that started off with “Turn off phones. Make wonderful memories” from LH and Cilantro. This one stood out to me because it reminded you to take in and enjoy the moments around you, especially with the two quotes from the guy’s daughters for his birthday, one saying he’s her best friend and the other simply trying to say Dada. Another interesting thing about this plaque was that they didn’t sign using their actual names so only the family knows that plaque is dedicated to him. It makes me wonder if that was the purpose of many of these plaques, to keep a special memory between those who it’s meant for. I personally wouldn’t want everyone to know the purpose of mine if I were to have one put up to keep the memory more special.

  1. I definitely do think that there is no specific name on the plaque to keep a special memory between those who it’s meant for. I also agree with your opinion that it would feel more special without a name.
