Final Reflection

Looking back at the last 15 weeks I believe that my writing did develop especially in the variety of writing that I could produce. Previously my writing seemed to all be the same and sound the same, however I think I have been able now to write with a variety of sentences and styles to make my writing more intriguing. At the start of the semester a big goal of mine was to write with a variety of sentence length and vocabulary. I believe that I have been able to add variety to my writing especially in the sentence length so now all my sentences don’t look and sound the same. One thing that I still could still work on is my vocabulary and using a variety of vocabulary because a lot of times while revising my work I notice I use the same words making my essay sound repetitive.

One writing piece that I am proud of is my rhetorical analysis essay. I am mostly proud of this one because while writing it I didn’t feel like it was my best work and I felt like I wouldn’t have a lot to write about. However in the end I was able to revise it and make an essay that I thought was relatively strong. I think that while writing I felt I was very critical of what I was writing and I thought it wasn’t a great essay, but now reading it over I think that I did a pretty good job at meeting all the criteria for the essay and writing in a passionate way. An important thing that I learned after writing this essay specifically is the importance of reading it back to myself outloud. We spoke of this method in class and after doing it I was able to see areas that didn’t really make sense and fix them. This method also helped me identify repetition in my essay which is a big thing I find in my essay, after seeing any repeating words I would substitute different ones for them.

On the other hand, a writing piece that I found a little difficult was the first essay we wrote which was a personal narrative. The main thing I found challenging with this was actually being able to put what I was thinking into words. The essay was about the effect of language on our lives so really trying to write something that made sense was something that I struggled with sometimes while writing the essay. One thing that really helped me with writing this was when I revised it and chose a sentence that I liked and isolated it and then began to write as if it were the start of a new paragraph, this method really helped expand my ideas and dive deep into them. Looking back at my essay, I now see that I did do lots of things well that I didn’t really see the first time, however I still can see that it could have used more revising which I did do in my second essay more. In general I think since the start of the semester I have been able to improve my writing as a whole, but there is still a lot that I could work on.
