THE MUMMY 1932:
“The Mummy” (1932) displays psychoanalytic theories on the scale of feminism and gender theory. Many systemic practices are subtly brought up throughout the film, including male dominance. In today’s society, male dominance is still present in the workforce, social relations, and religion. In relation to the film, Imhotep displays multiple accounts of sexual objectification and exploitation.
Imhotep clearly views Helen as a possession, which is how one usually views an object. Ultimately, insinuating the notion of women needing to be controlled or owned by a male figure. This motive may be masked by the indications of love, but through deeper meaning it display’s Imhotep’s want to reclaim Helen.
Exploitation is the act of taking advantage of someone for personal gain. The use of exploitation is quite obvious here as Imhotep uses his super natural abilities to influence Helen in a vulnerable state. Which is taking advantage of Helen’s state of being for the satisfaction of his.
I like how you connect this film to reflect the contemporary issues of women’s objectification and exploitation in various facets of society.
