Hi Everyone,
Thanks for a great discussion today!
For our next meeting, please write a one-paragraph response to these two questions:
What is a topic that I want to learn more about through writing my research essay?
Why I am interested in writing about this topic?
Also please read both “Entering the Conversation” and “The Art of Quoting” from They Say/I Say (available here) and bring these (either in digital form or printed) to class.
Finally, pick one quote from something you’ve read anywhere/anytime, and use the quote to enter a reader into a conversation. This should be no more than a paragraph.
Here’s an example: When some people read Matthew Crawford’s claim that “our distractibility seems to indicate that we are agnostic on the question of what is worth paying attention to–that is, what to value” (11), they might think that he is arguing we have lost our moral values. If we do not know what is worth paying attention to then we do not know what matters to us in life. But I think he is not saying this. I think he is claiming that these days we don’t have enough time to think. In my view, we know what is worth paying attention to but we’re having a harder time expressing how our attention is linked to our values.
