“What Elective Do You Wish Your School Offered?”

The Farm-to-table course is a course that I would take in highschool because of its immense importance on learning how to cook your meals. Cooking your meals is how a human can survive and is a skill that is required throughout life. One could argue that certain skill sets developed in highschool are eventually deemed irrelevant depending on one’s lifestyle and career path. However, a class that teaches someone how to make their meals can help them immensely in the future. In my highschool experience, I wish that my high school offered a financial literacy course that taught students how to save and invest their money. Given that highschool is a time where students start to work for the first time, many of these students are not familiar with how to properly save and potentially invest. This class would be an elective, meaning that it would be optional. The class would consist of students who are interested in becoming financially literate. The teacher would be someone who is already financially literate and can pass knowledge onto the students.

So far, the best elective I’ve taken was called entrepreneurship. I was in the first group of kids that took the class and sadly, this elective was only offered for one year. However, the teacher in this class was a business owner and part time teacher with the passion of teaching children how to follow their passion if that consisted of owning their own business. Surprisingly, many children shared this interest and I was lucky enough to get a spot in the full class for the year. Throughout the class, I learned the fundamental aspects of owning a business alongside things that many business owners tend to not speak about. Unfortunately, owning a business has been stereotyped to be easier than a “9-5” and people don’t realize that it may be even more difficult. Social media nowadays blurs the reality of what things truly are and creates people that are delusional.

It is crucial for schools to offer elective classes because aside from the core curriculum, this is the only way for students that explore their current interests and discover new ones. If students were subjected to only learning the core curriculum, there would be no time for the students to discover their passions in dance, sports, robotics, etc. Many schools don’t realize they are doing this to students.

  1. I also wish Baruch offered more electives! I wish I could learn more about music production and technology here instead of having to do an e-permit for another school.
