I got a start on my creative project and I’m excited about the outcome. I’m not sure how it’ll come together but I’m making a spin-off from my rhetorical analysis paper. That’s the project where we had to pick a thesis statement about BLM/BPP and write a paper. My paper was about the media’s portrayal of the movement. I’m no poet by any means but I’ve always loved poetry. I would’ve done a song, but I didn’t think anyone wanted to hear that (lol). I thought the abstract idea of movement transcending over time would be a great topic for a spoken word piece. In my paper, I indirectly posed a question, regarding who is really behind the media, so I decided to tie that all together. I was going to write a regular poem but as I was writing I realized if it isn’t read how I hear it in my head it may be a bit hard to grasp. I’m going to be working by myself.
The change of the medium doesn’t really change the theme of my paper. The paper was a more neutral point of view, in contrast to the poetry because I added more of my personal biases and opinions. I was able to express my personal feelings while still keeping it fact-based. I honestly haven’t thought of external material, I did have to look up a few things that I wanted to reference but they were ideas in my head that I couldn’t quite remember. One problem that I’m having is finding my flow. When you have a lot of ideas you want to include, especially in poetry, its so easy to get away from the point. I’m working on getting some sort of structure. I’ve been rereading and making tweaks so I’m hoping it all comes together nicely.
I really like that you chose a spoken word because you are completely right that sometimes a piece will not have the same feeling if it is not read in a certain way. I also spoke about the fact that my creative piece will include more bias in order to really get your point across.
I’ve never gotten into poetry myself, but the medium of poetry is fascinating and although it can be a bit difficult to start, but once you got a flow going a poem can sound really impressive.
