Project 3 Reflective Essay

I recently submitted project 3’s creative remix section  that spoke about the impact of media narratives on movements like Black Lives Matter (BLM) and the Black Panther Party (BPP). It was a big learning experience journey that taught me a lot about rhetoric, the power of multimedia, and the significance of sharing important messages in a public space, like our classroom!

In our project, we emphasized the importance of rhetoric, which includes factors like audience, purpose, genre, and most importantly for this project, medium. These elements play a role in how a message is taken and processed for people. For our project, we wanted to discuss the portrayal of BLM and BPP as violent groups by the media, highlighting their fight for justice and fight for the rights of their brothers and sisters in their own community.

So why did we choose a video slideshow with a voiceover? We believed that conveying our message verbally added a personal touch and made our points stronger and more relatable. It would also keep the audience engaged throughout the presentation. By combining images with verbal analysis, we aimed to offer a detailed view of the issues at hand.

Choosing the mode and medium for our project was a strategic decision. We chose a multimedia format because it offers a few benefits. Firstly, it helps audience understanding by presenting information in different ways. Secondly, it increases engagement, as multimedia content tends to capture attention more effectively than plain writing or just text.

Working with multimedia comes with challenges and some benefits. We used Apple Photos and TikTok for our video editing, despite having limited editing experience. Even though we faced some trial and error moments, the overall process was easy! We did have occasional glitches, but the end result was well worth it.

By making our project accessible beyond the classroom (on YouTube), we aim to keep having conversations and raise awareness about social justice movements like BLM and BPP.

In conclusion, our journey in this project shows us the power of multimedia in challenging society; narratives  It showed me firsthand how choices in rhetoric, mode, and medium can shape the impact of a message. I’m excited to continue exploring these ideas and contributing to important conversations through multimedia.
