Project 3 Reflective Essay

I recently turned in Project 3’s creative remix part, where we talked about how media narratives affect movements like Black Lives Matter (BLM) and the Black Panther Party (BPP). This project was a big learning experience for me, teaching me about rhetoric, the power of multimedia, and how important it is to share messages in public spaces like our classroom. In our project, we focused on rhetoric, including things like audience, purpose, genre, and especially the medium. These factors influence how people understand a message. We wanted to show how the media often portrays BLM and BPP as violent, but really, they’re fighting for justice and the rights of their communities.

We picked a video slideshow with a voiceover because we thought that talking about our message made it more personal and relatable. It also kept the audience more interested. By combining pictures with our voices, we aimed to give a clearer view of the issues. Choosing the mode and medium for our project was important. We went with a multimedia format because it has benefits. First, it helps people understand better by showing information in different ways. Second, it grabs attention more effectively than plain writing or text.

Using multimedia had its challenges and benefits. We used Apple Photos and TikTok for editing, even though we didn’t have much experience. We had some trial and error moments, but the process was pretty easy overall. Despite some glitches, the final result was worth it. We also had to consider privacy issues with sharing our work online, as well as copyright concerns. We made sure to use Creative Commons-licensed materials to avoid any legal issues.

By sharing our project beyond the classroom (on YouTube), we want to keep the conversation going and raise awareness about social justice movements like BLM and BPP. We understand the importance of making our work accessible to a wider audience and the potential impact it can have. In the end, this project showed us the power of multimedia in changing society’s views. It taught me how choices in rhetoric, mode, and medium can shape a message’s impact. I’m excited to keep exploring these ideas and contributing to important conversations through multimedia.
