Does “The Tattooer” end with a vision of female empowerment? Who is in control in the final scene?
Month: April 2018
question two
Find a passage in the story that contains eroticized language and quote it here. What does Tanizaki compare to sex, and why?
question one
Discuss one of the images that Seikichi shows to the girl, explaining what relation it has to the story.
Tanizaki questions
I will post each question separately. Please offer a reply–using a quotation from the text–to one and engage with another student’s reply to that question or another.
Class housekeeping
A few items of note:
- Please see information about the art-a-thon below, including an opportunity for extra credit.
- Please read both Tanazaki and Tagore for next time. To make up for our missed class, we will have an online discussion of “The Tattooer,” but also bring both stories to class. I have placed a .pdf of Tanazaki’s story under “readings” so you don’t have to bring two volumes of our text to campus on the same day.
- Please log on between classtime Wednesday, April 11th (when we do not meet) and classtime Monday, April 16th, in order to respond to the discussion questions I will post here.

As I mentioned in class today, I am offering 3 points of extra credit for participation in the marathon reading taking place. Just post a photo of yourself reading as a reply to this post! As an added incentive, I’ll mention that there will be pizza…
