This is my rough outline of what I will say in my video voiceover. I probably talk with more details and emotions. I will display the questions with text design, and the answers will be in voiceover.
- When was your first memorable experience with makeup?
- When I was in 8th grade, I visited my sister in California, and she put very simple eyeshadow on my eyes and I thought it was such beautiful art on my eyelids. My oldest sister put the makeup on with such love, care, creativity, and patience, that her positive energy still resonates with me today.
- When did you begin wearing makeup?
- In 8th grade, I wore just eyeliner, nothing else. I started to play around with makeup in 9th grade.
- How did it make you feel?
- It made me feel powerful, confident, and creative. I was able to create art using my face as a canvas.
- How did you realize that makeup was a creative outlet for you?
- As I gained more interest in makeup my family bought me makeup in so many different colors, I drew art on my eyes and my face, and other people began to ask me to do it for them for events and for parties. I mainly thought it was fun during Halloween.
- Why makeup? Why not any other form of art?
- I love how I am a walking canvas, I don’t need paper, I don’t need a cloth canvas, I just need my face/body and my makeup to create something. It can be abstract, it can be whatever I want. I also use photography as another form of art to show my makeup to the world.
- What do you think are the main misconceptions about makeup?
- “You wear makeup to impress others”
- “You only care about looks”
- “Self-absorbed”
- Do you think makeup is for everyone?
- I think Makeup is a form of creative expression, this can be for anyone from women to men.
- Not everyone will be comfortable with makeup, whoever resonates with the form of art should feel free to do it and not judged.
- Do you think there is a “right” way of doing makeup?
- No, it’s how makeup makes you feel. If you feel confident and happy then that’s the right way for you. It doesn’t matter if you “overline” your lips or don’t blend all the way.
- If you aren’t disrespecting anyone or harming others then it doesn’t matter what is right/wrong.
- How often do you apply makeup?
- I usually don’t wear makeup going to school/zoom
- But I do apply makeup usually once a week to create content for social media.
- Do you think that makeup is a mask of who you truly are?
- Do you think it may be deceiving?
- I think when I do makeup, I feel like it is who I am. I have been doing makeup for nearly 10 years. I am not deceiving myself nor intend to deceive others.
- I know that many people do think it is a way of deception but I don’t think it is. I am doing what I want with my body and I am happy. My significant other and family also support what I do.
- Do you think it may be deceiving?
- Do you still wear makeup during COVID-19 quarantine?
- Yes! I will wear makeup even if I am not going anywhere, it’s a way to unwind and relax. It isn’t for others, it is for myself. I also love sharing my work for others to show inspiration and promote other beauty brands that I support.
- What do you think of the makeup and beauty industry?
- Do you think it can be a toxic and dangerous industry?
- Yes, the industry can be toxic in a way where it can influence others to have unrealistic beauty standards. If you stay close to your core values and why you are doing makeup in the first place, hopefully, you won’t stray too far from your own values and happiness.
- Do you think it can be a toxic and dangerous industry?
- Do you think you will stop doing makeup one day down the road?
- Probably not, I feel like I will be a granny one day walking around with winged eyeliner, it’s just a part of me.
- Whatever makes me happy, if I am not happy somehow with makeup then I will stop.
- What does makeup mean to you? How has makeup changed you?
- When I think of my experience with makeup, I feel like it’s empowering. I used to be a shy girl, and I definitely think makeup was a huge part of my confidence growing up. Even when I don’t wear makeup, I feel confident. I think that makeup has guided me to a point where I don’t do makeup for others but only for myself, and that is what makes me happy.
