Zine Workshop

Overview: Inspired by the sources explored during the semester and your reflections written in class you will create with your group a physical or digital zine. A zine is a noncommercial original magazine usually devoted to specialized and often marginalized subject matter. The zine you will create in this class will be an interdisciplinary exploration of Afro-Latinidades. This project is intended for you to demonstrate your creativity, critical thinking, research skills, and understanding of course concepts and themes.

Concept

Who are you making the zine for? What communities are important to you?

Style and Tone

How do you want to affect your audience? What jargon or colloquialisms do you want to use or avoid? What feelings do you want to express? Does it make sense to use your sense of humor to express yourself? What politics are important to you? Are you protesting something or someone? What sources for the class have been important/relevant/relatable to you?

Here’s an expansive (not exhaustive) list of topics to consider for zine content:

.Histories of racial perspectives

.Hertories of Black liberation in the Americas

.Legacies and spaces of marronage

.Black diasporic rituals and spiritual practices

.Afro-Latinx visual arts, storytelling and poetics

.Afro-Latinx music and performances

Initial Brainstorm and Listening Session

Part I (10 Minutes)

Jot down your individual ideas:

.Brainstorm specific concepts, discussions, storylines, atmospheres, sounds (if it is a digital zine), and images you would like to include in the project.

.Create a quick conceptual map that shows how your ideas connect to course sources.

Part II (20 minutes)

.By engaging in active listening (silently taking in what the other is saying without interruptions), each member will introduce themselves and share their ideas with the group.

.Engage in dynamic feedback. Identify common threads and perspectives.

Part III (5 minutes)

.Summarize key points discussed during the session and strategize the next steps.
