Next Steps…

Journal #3

Transitioning from high school to college can definitely be a big change. I got accustomed to the teaching styles that my high school had by the time I came to Baruch. When I started my classes, I realized that you may not always learn everything in class and that you must take an initiative to learn the material, regardless if it is taught in class. I wanted to maintain an A in my Applied Calculus course, but as the material began to get harder and the professor would skip over lectures in order to finish the course in time for the final, that caused me a lot of stress. I was accustomed to always do well in math classes, as it was something I enjoyed, but this situation made me feel as if I wasn’t so great at math anymore and that was an upsetting feeling. After finding out from my professor that tutoring at Baruch is free and available to everyone, I went to SACC. I started off by signing up for weekly reviews to make sure I understood the material well, but as time went on and more material was skipped, I began to sign up for private tutoring. It was an amazing experience and I’m so happy that it is available for everyone. The day after my tutoring session we had a quiz in class and I was ecstatic to find out that what I learned in tutoring was never mentioned in class and it just so happened to be on the quiz. I am definitely going to attend more tutoring sessions throughout my years here at Baruch, because even if I understand the material, just being able to practice it and get some pointers is something that I appreciate.

I am also very grateful to have the Bowery Mission as my Community Service Project. I love working with people and helping the community grow, so I am really happy that we found out about other students’ volunteer experience there. I look forward to volunteering and gaining new experience there in my following semester. I have always loved helping those in need as I have done lots of volunteering before. Whether it be handing out supplies to the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy or even volunteering at the New York City Fire Museum, I believe that one small act of kindness can go a long way.

In the next three years, I hope to gain a lot of new experiences. My time at Baruch thus far has shown me that the world has an abundance of things that I have not yet discovered. I hope that by then I will have found my place in the world and grown as a person.

What It Means to Serve My Community

Journal #2

I feel as if I currently do not have a big role in the Baruch community, but I hope to change that in the near future. I haven’t joined any clubs within Baruch because I wanted to explore what the city has to offer before devoting all my time to a single club. When I do end up settling down with a club, I hope it is something related to the field of finance so I can get a better idea of what it is like for the future. I think it will definitely help me determine if I truly love what I do and test the waters before diving in.

I think that my role in the broader community as a Baruch Scholar should be to help those in need because not a lot of people have such an amazing opportunity. Not only am I able to attend college and pursue a higher education, but I am able to do so at no cost (or at least with a tiny technology fee). I believe that if something good happens to you, you should always try to brighten someone else day just to pass it on. The culture of service within the Honors Program allows students to experience the joy of helping someone else and allows me to devote more time to help the community. Since it is a part of the program, its great to be able to have some class time devoted to researching ways that we can help the community within our groups. It was amazing to learn that those around me have the same interests and concerns as me when it comes to issues within our community. During high school, I was the Co-President of PACT (Public Awareness for Charity by Teens) and it made me feel great every single time we had an event and helped those around us. I was sad to leave it behind when I graduated, but when I found out that one of our group projects is to volunteer, I was ecstatic to find out what cause we would be choosing.

Since New York City is pretty much another world in itself, there is so many things we can do to grow as people. Whether it is to figure out who you are or how to help others, I believe that right now, as students, we should devote this time to figuring out who we are as individuals. Community service will allow me to further discover what I am passionate about and thus aiding me in my growth.

Where Have I Been and Where I’m Going

Journal #1

When I was younger, I would see college students in movies and think, “Wow they are pretty old, it is going to be forever until I become a college student.” Now here I am, one of those college students and I still can’t wrap my mind around that. My high school years seem to have flown by with the blink of an eye. I remember watching Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide in middle school to prepare myself for what high school has to offer as if it was yesterday (it was nothing like the show sadly).

Many things have shaped who I am today. My family, friends, and jobs have all played a role in making me. I believe my family has taught me that I should get out there and do what feels like the impossible, meanwhile my friends have taught me that I should believe in myself. The jobs I’ve had, on the other hand, have shown me that through hard work, you can move up and get that promotion or get those around you to look up to you and go to you for advice.

As a college student, I have similar goals to my peers. I want to maintain a social life as well as a 4.0 GPA. I also want to figure out exactly what it is that I want to do in the future. Yes I have declared a major, but is it something I would love doing everyday? Is it what I thought it would be like, or is it something absolutely different? Will I wake up happy everyday and excited to go to work? These are all the things I hope to answer in my college years. I hope to make lots of connections and take up internships as a way of figuring myself out.

As for the first semester, I hope that I can maintain that beautiful 4.0 GPA (insert angels singing here) and make new connections. I also hope that I can achieve my small goal of moving out for college, even if it is just for the semester (fingers crossed). Besides all that, I just hope that I will be happy in this new environment. If I am happy then I think everything will fall into place just as it should. 🙂
