APA

Hi Everyone,

The APA annual conference is taking place in Washington, D.C. Aug. 7-10. They are accepting proposals until Monday, December 2! This conference is a lot closer than the APS which is taking place in San Francisco.  This would be a great experience for anyone looking at graduate school for next year or in a few years. Thanksgiving break is a great opportunity to take the time and put together a proposal before the deadline!

I know everyone has been very busy with class, graduate school applications, and work in their labs. To the extent it may seems as if there is little time to consider changing our daily decision that do not cause an immediate and direct negative impact. But, in the wake of the devastating typhoon haiyan and other recent natural disasters, I think we all need to be taking the extra moment out of our day to consider our decisions and their long term impact on our environment and the consequential destruction of the planet we share. In addition to make small efforts to engage in a more proactive role rather than a bystander role.

If you get the chance you should take a look at the article linked below and watch the video of Naderev Sano speech at the UN climate talks which is currently taking place in Warsaw, Poland. Sano is a member of the Philippines Climate Change Commissions.

NEPA Graduate School Tips

Hi Everyone,

When I was at the NEPA Conference on Saturday, one of the events was about Graduate School In Psychology: From A Challenging Market To A Successful Career. It was a panelist discussion talking about the different options and opportunities. It discussed how to choose the right graduate program for you, and how to distinguish between programs.

Tips to writing an application, what questions to ask in an interview, what to know about debt and student loans, and what to expect in terms of career options and salary.

They created a guide to help students prepare for graduate school. You can find the url link at: tinyurl.com/rightgradprogram

TedTalk How to Deal with Stress

I came across a Ted talk about stress that I found quite interesting and helpful. We all will undoubtedly come across stress, whether while studying for GREs, making graduate school deadlines, or juggling school, work, and life.  The talk with Kelly McGonigal discussions studies which have found that in changing your perceptions about the psychological onset of stress on your body can change and negative health effects of stress into positive ones of courage and resistance. Examples provided include thinking about stress as a positive and exciting challenge and your body’s reaction of an increased heart rate and sweating are there to help “pump you up” and get you ready to meet the challenge, instead of there to negatively affect your performance.
