Choosing a Research Topic

Hi everyone,

I’ve posted some sites that I thought could be helpful in picking a research topic now, or for the future. It seems like such a daunting task because there are so many options, but I think it comes down to what interests you most, and what you would like to learn more about through completing an intensive project. Luckily, we have our mentors and other professors to help guide us in this process.

Here are the links; hopefully they spark some new ideas:

Psychology Topics by the APA

Stanford’s Undergrad Guide to honing in on a topic

Brandeis possible thesis topics (I really like this site, because it specifies different questions within various areas of psychology–health, clinical, social, neuro)

Hope this helps!

Easten Psychological Association (EPA)

Hi everyone! Aisha, Katherine, and I had a lab meeting yesterday with our mentor, Dr. Artistico. He mentioned attending the Eastern Psychological Association’s Conference to learn about research that’s going on in the field, make connections with people at other schools, and present our own work. I think that, previously, Dr. Engle-Friedman brought up the EPA Conference in class, but I’m not sure if the link was posted up on the blog. Anyway, the conference will take place in Boston, Massachusetts, from March 13-16, 2014, and costs $25 for student affiliates. They also have a deal for hotel rooms! I’d encourage everyone to check it out. Here is the link to the “Student” page: http://www.easternpsychological.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3504

Best,

New York Times Article

I’m not sure if anyone else has seen this article published back in September by the New York Times, called “Psychotherapy’s Image Problem.” I thought it was a really interesting, worthwhile piece because it highlighted how people nowadays (especially insurance companies) are so eager to dismiss “the talking cure,” and label it as something that is unhelpful and unimportant. However, research has shown that psychotherapy, also undertaken in conjunction with medication depending on what’s being treated, has provided patients with huge benefits and long-term effects.

Join the APA!

If anyone is interested in becoming a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) as an undergraduate student, here is a link to the APA page: http://www.apa.org/membership/student/index.aspx. The eligibility page states that “all undergraduates taking psychology courses can become an APA affiliate.” Furthermore, if you join between now and Dec. 31st, your membership would carry over to next year, as well. Benefits include receiving the APA journal, scholarships and awards, and special rates for registering for the APA convention. Lastly, it costs $35 for undergraduates to become members. Best of luck!

Interested in Abnormal Psych?

Hi everyone,

Since it seems like several people in our class are interested in clinical psychology, I’ve shared some of my findings in this post related to clinical psych labs in the New York City area. Specifically, I posted a link below to Hunter College’s (CUNY) Psychology Labs, if anyone is interested in gaining further research experience directly related to topics such as autism, depression, and psychopathology. The page also lists labs focusing on developmental, social, and bio-psychological research, as well.

For clinical psychology, I’d suggest looking into Dr. Miranda, Dr. Dennis, and Dr. Mennin’s labs!

Best of luck!
