NCUR Conference

Hey everyone,

If anyone is interested in attending the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in 2014, it’s at the University of Kentucky (Lexington) on April 3rd-5th.

Also, if anyone has anything they would like to present at the conference, they are still accepting submissions!

The submission deadline is Thursday, December 6 at 11:59 PM.

Remember, that we have funding to attend a conference so I suggest we all take advantage of this opportunity.

If anyone has questions, you can email Drew Adair at [email protected] at the Macaulay Honors College.

Fordham, Fordham, Fordham

Last week, it was great to have Adam Fried from Fordham University speak to us. I wasn’t considering Fordham as a school, but I thought the opportunity was nice to have.

However, I recently took the GRE and my scores were not where I needed them to be. I started to worry that I wouldn’t get into any of the programs I’m applying to and I thought that maybe I should be applying to more schools to give myself options. The next question, of course, was where should I apply? And Fordham stuck out in my mind!

I am now applying to Fordham (along with Adelphi) to give myself more options. Even though they are a bit far from my home (about 2 hours by train), I think having more options means a better chance of acceptance at one of them.

If anyone else is interested in Fordham, let me know!

The IAT

Hey guys,

In class I spoke about using the IAT in my lab and for my own independent research. As I said, the IAT that is the most well-known is the race IAT which can be found here (it’s the 3rd one):

https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html

This website can help you understand what the IAT is by actually allowing you to complete one (and adding to the data). There are also a few other versions of the IAT if you are interested in them. Take a look at them, they’re pretty cool.

I couldn’t find the environmental sustainability IAT online but I did find an article about it:

For those who are working on environmental sustainability in their labs might want to check it out.

GRE Countdown

As I was perusing the posts already on the blog, Darren’s post really spoke to me. I am also taking the Psychology GRE really soon (next weekend!) and the nerves are really kicking in. I’m also taking the General GRE the following weekend so it’s crunch time. I would highly recommend against taking these 2 tests so closely together. I’ve been focusing so much on studying for the Psychology GRE that it’s really hindered me from properly preparing for the General GRE. And another tip: start early! I began my studying at the end of the summer and feel that it put me at a disadvantage.

For anyone that wants to start preparing for these tests, I recommend the Kaplan book for psychology- it’s really comprehensive!

Just a heads up, the next test date is April 5th, 2014 so if you’re interested, start studying! 🙂

Teacher’s College Open House

In class, some students expressed interest in The Teacher’s College (Part of Columbia University). They are having an open house this Saturday, October 5th. This would be a really great opportunity for those students, and any others that are interested, to get a look at the school.

TC’s website gives a description of what is included in their open house:

The Office of Admission hosts three Fall Open Houses. These two-hour events provide a comprehensive look at the College and feature remarks from a TC faculty member, a student, and an Admission and Financial Aid representative. They also include smaller break-out sessions led by Admission liaisons where prospective students can meet others interested in their department of interest. An optional campus tour, hosted by one of our Student Ambassadors, will follow each afternoon event.

There are additional open houses in case anyone can’t attend on Saturday.

The dates are:

Saturday, October 5 (This Saturday)

Saturday, November 16

Thursday, December 5
